I don't know that I agree that Sam is more the hero of the story. I think he is equally as important to the story as Frodo, mainly due to his allegiance to Frodo and faith in the purpose of the quest. Sam did not have the same pressure as carrying the ring and the family tie to Bilbo. But, I think the story itself is as much about Sam as Frodo.

As a purist, I wanted to see Tom Bombadil as well... that said, he doesn't really advance the story much, and I can understand why he was cut.

I was little annoyed with how they played Denethor, though. He was supposed to be a tragic figure who had lost his hope. Instead he just came off like a asshat who didn't know what he had until it was too late.

In the movie, they definitely played up the struggle among Sam, Frodo and Gollum a bit more than the book. It was however necessary so that the climax could have a bit more bang. But face it, had they gotten rid of Gollum alot earlier in the story, (as Gandalf foreshadowed in Moria) the Ring would never have been destroyed.

I liked that they brought in elves at Helm's Deep, although their arrival was a bit corny (who am I kidding...gay). At least they gave Haldir a good death scene.

It also would have been nice to throw in a little Glorfindel into the movie. If only Tolkien had given him a larger part in the book. But Tolkien did cover his tracks on that issue in the Unfinished Tales.

My whiny fanboy complaint about the movies was that they warped Faramir's character pretty badly. He's supposed to be like Aragorn in that the spirit of the Westernesse runs true in him (and not Boromir), so that when Frodo appears with the ring he has the strength of characters to pass on it. Instead he gets to be wishy-washy; I understand Jackson didn't want to confuse the masses regarding the lure of the ring, but I was a little disappointed. It makes the jeopardy for Faramir's life during the Pelennor Fields less meaningful.

Since we're going down this road, anyone want to weigh in on the Turin v. Glorfindel debate?

I did not like the way they portrayed Elrond in the movie, he's a giant prick. In the book Elrond loves Aragorn like a son

Wow, Jackson did a great casting that character

Anyways, I hate the movies and think Jackson wasn't a good enough director to capture any of the spirit of the books.
