its a sad day to be a horn. 8 out of 9 in our 2015 are 3 stars, one four stars....

It's a great day to be a Horn, unless, of course, you're not one.......then everyday is a sad day!

all the four and five stars mack recruited the past five years have resulted in mediocre football teams and no longhorns drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft this week.

Mean while, Strong recruited a bunch of three stars at Louisville over the past three years and has been to two (?) BCS games. Also, he coached up his players and 5 or six have been drafted through the first 3 rounds.

Five stars are great, true. Coaching is the key, and soon the five stars will be coming back because this program is on the rise. And the 4 and 5 stars will be coached up, which will translate into B12 Championships.

Being hungry and toughness does wonders for a football program.

Let's see how the star ratings are looking by next January. I predict that the complexion of the 15 class will be considerably more attractive by then.

O P, you need to check the recruiting services re: star rankings for the 2015 class. Here is a quote from an article I just read. __Toby Weathersby is one of six four-star commits in Texas' 2015 class.___

You can find the link in the "on the field" thread re: no horns drafted; link on page two.

i can agree to an extent about coaching up players. but then you can't teach athletic ability. look at all the players mack did coach to the NFL. many were four or five stars. just this recent haul had a lot of busts. you can teach derek johnsons closing speed, etc.

sure there are those three star gems, like michael huff...but how often does that happen...lets not compare bcs berths from a weaker conference that louisville was in. this is the BIG 12.

Yep, those four and five stars really showed up well the past several years didn't they? And what typified it most, those four or five stars could not tackle or block. e.g. a "skill" or talent that most should have learned in junior high was missing. Poor evaluation of talent? Most probably, and that number of stars after their names wasn't even close to telling the story. Maybe failure to " develop the player - well it was too late for that. Skills that should have been learned as a twelve year old and then developed before arrival at UT shouldn't have had to be taught on the forty acres. And again, those were our four and five stars. We just didn't notice? I, for one, am all for trying out these three star guys. We can do no worse.

The Louiville schedules were not big 12 tough overall. No doubt. But Strong did win big games against out of conference teams in critical situations. against #4 Fla. in the Sugar Bowl, for example.

And although fundamentals are taught in pee wee football, and high school, they are not taught as soundly or as correctly as in college and the pros. Otherwise we could just hire Joe Bob next door who coaches Pop Warner football to coach the Longhorns Linebackers.

think of a classical musician, or prima ballet dancer. They work on fundamentals of their craft since childhood for hours a day. They never stop practicing. They work on fundamentals of their performing skills till the day they retire. Fundamentals must be practiced, honed, sharpened constantly or they deteriorate.

There are no shortcuts to excellence. Talent only opens the door. Practice and proper coaching/teaching keeps you in the room/game.

It should be noted that Teddy Bridgewater.was a three star, Per Charlie Strong he was raised to a four star when he signed with Louisville.

yes, but back in the earlier years, we could get those four and five stars that are now going to A&M....and yes they don't all pan out but a lot do too. the point is, we can't get them now when we want them...

the vaunted 2002 longhorn football recruiting class, a wet dream...yes one three star blossomed brian robison...the rest were four and five stars....it matters.

mack's talent evaluation slipped towards the end of his career, as he was just collecting paychecks i guess. point is, we could not get this class now if we wanted them

Well, any coach in their right mind, would rather coach up a 4-5 star player over a lesser player. Some God-given talents can't be coached. Think Saban or Miles would be the coaches they are, only signing 3-star players? I think not. Definitely makes you a better coach, winning more games, etc. Charlie has to find a way to get those higher rated players in here, if he expects to compete nationally. That's all I'm saying.

johnnyg88 is correct. So far Strong has only gotten 11 three stars and 1 two star either committed or signed.
He has had jr days and the spring game has yet to get even one four or five star recruit to commit. It is a long time until next February, but we wont get to where we want to be (NC game) with three star players.

Relax guys, Strong is working with one hand tied behind his back. These kids have watched UT teams fall flat on our face their entire HS football career. At the same time they watched Baylor emerge, A&M get swag (lol), and the SEC media jerkfest hit epic proportions. These teams are selling programs provenly on the rise or already a usual football force (Bama, LSU, etc). Strong is having to use unsupported promises that UT football will be resurrected quickly.

Let the guy get a season where marked improvement and fan excitement returns through productive results on the field and positive media attention FOR A CHANGE. The national media has used us as punchlines for these down years. Once we show some clout, then Strong will be on equal or substantial footing going into his recruiting pitches. Patience, the man just got here and hasn't gone through a summer practice yet.

The UT brand and past accomplishments aren't good enough anymore, which is the point Strong is making to the team. The entitlement bs is over with, because we've done nothing for a handful of years to be special as a football program. Others around us have. It's time to earn respect. If the players earn respect, then our coaches will be equipped with respect through proven results also. It goes hand in hand.

Perspective. We aren't **** right now...period. It's time to earn the right to have swagger again. That's only done on the field. To the victors goes the spoils...way it is. We aren't the only ones with excellent facilities and degree that demands respect. But we are the ones who have earned zero respect on the field as of late.

Strong is having issues recruiting, winning will solve that but he needs to have a special year next year or he and Texas will be in trouble over the next 3-5 years. Next years team will be the most talented team he has had in his very short HC tenure. Anything less than 10 wins would not be good.

Thought about it and last year's team would have probably beaten last year's Louisville team after the OU game when Robinson had a few weeks over the defense .
Probably would have been close, but after October I would give the nod to Texas. Robinson would have shut Louisville's/Watson's offense down despite Bridgewater and we would have been able to run the ball and score enough to win despite McCoy.
The best players from last years Texas team are returning.

We couldn't have beat Louisville last year. And we are still lacking in talent in a bunch of areas. Strong will get us there, but it won't happen overnight. Just glad we are getting some QBs in here to compete.

L'ville's 3rd ranked scoring defense (12.4 ppg, behind only FSU and Bama) would have destroyed our offense and the Case train. No doubt we would have turned the ball over and lost the field position battle.

We may have kept it to a TD game, but couldn't have matched the defensive dominance. Their pass d gave up 8 TD's and had 16 picks. Had #2 rush defense allowing 86.7 ypg, 2.7 ypc, and 9 TD's. Come on now, we're not moving the ball and scoring much on that.

BTW, 4-star QB commits to Texas yesterday. Ain't over yet fellows.

So you are saying the Texas team that took the field against OU could not have possibly beaten Louisville on that day? A lot of people are underestimating the talent on our roster.
On a brighter note , our HC has finally gotten his first four star commit. Hopefully, the new recruiting coordinator can help the HC improve on this years class.

Rivals has us at #19 with 8 three stars and 2 four stars.
1 four star and 1 three star are Mack's recruits.
I hope Scout is a better evaluator of talent.
