Erick Fowler ..... Manor (Manor, TX)
:hookem::hookem::hookem::hookem:-horn ..... DE ..... 6-1/226 ..... LSU TEXAS
Fowler is the step-brother of DL Tank Jackson.

Per Scout(1) and Scout(2):
Fowler is a player who is perfectly suited to be an edge player in college whether he puts his hand on the ground or does it from a stand-up position, it matters little. All that matters is that he is a whirlwind of a defender who constantly applies pressure to the opposing offenses, sucking up running back behind the line of scrimmage and sacking quarterbacks often. He has the size to take a pounding and deliver one as equally as well.

He is one of the best linebackers in the Lone Star State and potentially even in the country. He's a very skilled prospect who can move well and rush the passer, and could even grow into a defensive end.

Per 247Sports:
"My whole family loves Texas. I grew up a Texas fan, and everybody in my family is like the biggest Texas fan ever. For me to play for Texas would be a blessing.

"I’ve talked to Coach Bedford about it, and he definitely wants me as an outside linebacker. I think that’s the best fit for me. We actually run the same defense at Manor as Texas does, so nothing would change."

Erick Fowler, who committed to LSU in mid-June, will be at Texas’ Under the Lights camp on July 18.

In talking to Fowler and his father, this one’s far from over. Mr. Fowler said he bleeds burnt orange and he’s keeping the lines of communication open with the Texas staff. He wants his son to do whatever’s best for him and be happy, but if Mr. Fowler has his way, it will be at Texas.

Erick had this to say, “I really have belief in Texas. I like how they transform players into men, give them responsibilities and have high expectations for them. A lot can happen between now and February. I really like LSU and I also really like Texas.”

“I love Coach Bedford and Coach Strong. They talk about life after football, which I strongly believe. They try to make me become a man on and off the field,” Fowler said.

Vance visiting Erick Fowler today.

Here is Wilkerson's take --
"The Longhorns have been after Erick Fowler for a really, really long time. He was one of the very first 2016 DE's to receive a Texas offer. So selling him on the program is something both parties are well-versed in. We do know that Vance Bedford was one of the coaches that went to visit the four-star defensive end today. No word on if Brick Haley went as well. From what we understand, the Longhorns still feel like they have a legitimate chance here. It obviously hurt UT's chances that Les Miles was told he'd remain the Tigers head coach. There are plenty of questions Fowler will surely want answers for: Will Bedford be back as defensive coordinator? Will Haley return? What's Charlie Strong's future look like in Austin? A lot of unknowns right now, but nothing has suggested that Bedford is in any trouble of losing his job. I still think it's a long shot but I would give UT a puncher's chance here. Don't forget that Fowler and Texas 2017 QB commitment Sam Ehlinger are really good friends."

Texas stopped by last week to do an in-home with Manor LB Erick Fowler, who is committed to LSU.

"Coach Bedford came by for a home visit last week. Great man," we were told.

I was told by someone close to Fowler that he will take an official visit to Texas on January 16. That's big news. The Longhorns just need to keep chipping away at this one.

Fowler would be an excellent addition. Local guy in position of need (aren't they all), need to keep him in Texas.

LSU is changing their DC - Steele out, replaced by Wisconsin DC Aranda. I wonder if he is going to shake up their staff. DL coach is Orgeron who replaced Brick Haley. Good coach but always seems to be on list of guys being considered for HC jobs elsewhere.

Erick Fowler is conflicted. As it’s been throughout his recruitment, Fowler, an LSU commit, is split between the Tigers and the Longhorns. An LSU fan growing up, Fowler always wanted to play at night in Death Valley. But, at the same time, growing up in Manor, his entire family, heck, his town, is pulling for him to end up at Texas.

So with a month until National Signing Day, it’s understandable Fowler has a lot on his mind. “(LSU) is my favorite school, and I definitely want to go there,” Fowler said. “But it’s definitely a tough battle between LSU and UT right now.”

Fowler has an official visit set to Texas the weekend of January 15, and he’ll take a trip to LSU the next weekend as well. In addition to that, Fowler also has plans to take official visits to UCLA and Oregon, if he can make them fit. But, for all intents and purposes, it’s an LSU-Texas battle.

The Tigers recently hired Dave Aranda away from Wisconsin to be their defensive coordinator, and at least from what he’s seen on tape, Fowler likes Aranda’s scheme. “I watched the video of the defensive scheme, and I kind of like what they’re bringing in there,” Fowler said. “I think it was a good change.”

Fowler, a standup pass rusher, is looking for a place where he can make a difference getting after quarterbacks. Right now, he feels LSU has that for him. But the same can be said of Texas, where head coach Charlie Strong wants Fowler at the “Fox.”

The 6-foot-1, 232-pound linebacker has gotten to know the Texas staff well over the last two years, and he knows he’d be comfortable if he ended up picking the Longhorns. “If they could, they’d call me every day to check and see how I’m doing to see if I’m keeping my head straight,” Fowler said. “They just like to hear from me.”

Fowler’s future destination will likely be determined over the next few weeks on his visits. There’s a lot to think about, but at the end of the day, Fowler also has an eye toward the future. “I know people say it just to say it, but I am really thinking about life after football,” Fowler said. “All the networking and all the people I get to meet (at a school) is important.”

Think about it, Erick...
LSU = Louisiana networking
UT = World wide networking

Don't we have lsu on the schedule in the coming years he just may still get to play his game there

Per TFB:
Received a quick update from one of Erick Fowler’s family members who took the trip with Erick to Texas this weekend.

One of the big issues for Erick and his family is, as a Fox LB, Naashon Hughes already holds the spot and even if there is rotation, Derick Roberson would seem to be next in line. Apparently, Roberson told Erick that he will be switching to a true defensive end next year which obviously opens things up for Fowler.

Bottom line, “Erick was impressed” with the whole weekend.

Per a poster on another site:
Eric Fowler – some backstory . . . I did not know this until today, but Desmond Jackson and Fowler are step-brothers.

We had some ground to make up with Fowler from the start due to some negative vibes from the perception that our coaches favored the young guys. Just didn't sit well for a while with Fowler's dad, having watched Jackson and the defense this year.

Coaches have made up that ground and more. The film room presentation where Fowler's role was broken down in film and whiteboard . . made a big impression . . lasting impression.

Based on what I know now, I expect Fowler to be in this class. We'll see after the visit to LSU. Credit should also go to Derrick Roberson, who did a great job of recruiting Fowler, too.

We're in a dead heat with LSU for Fowler's commitment.

His OV to LSU with his parents helped ease mom's mind about the prospects of her son cuddling with the Tigers. IOW, she'll be fine with him choosing either school.

Erick had a great time during his UT OV. He already knew the coaches pretty well, but was most impressed with the vibe he got from the players and other recruits - he was feelin' it, believin' it, and ridin' it.

The fam will jam sometime this week/weekend, but, it appears, will not try to sway Erick.

As of last night, Fowler's Twitter profile read:

As of now, it reads:
Gods Child × Student Athlete× × TheChosen1 × LongLiveLance × NLMB × R.I.P Boogi 5

Notice what's missing?

One is not like the other. Advantage: Texas.

The LSU247 mod (Shea Dixon, I think) said today that nobody has been able to get through to him directly on his cell phone (which is broken, apparently) for a few weeks. Apparently not just the LSU guys, but others too. Fowler has been happy just using his dad's and mom's phones. So, the pay site guys have all been flying a bit blind for a while on Fowler. Obviously, the coaches have been talking to Fowler and Charlie met him and his dad yesterday at Manor. Except for the twitter thing last night (which was really significant though), nobody seems to have any new info today. But there certainly is no pro-LSU stuff coming from anywhere, while a few people are saying that there are sources in Austin close to the situation who feel that Charlie may have closed this deal. That would be a huge flip if so. The comments from the mom after their trip to LSU last weekend seemed like Fowler was not a possibility at all, especially as it was mom and dad who were really pushing him to Texas. They didn't seem unhappy with LSU like we thought. So I assumed he was a goner. But, though he always liked LSU, it is not like he had no love for Texas which is right next door to him, contrary to reports that he grew up only as a huge LSU fan. I guess when push is coming to shove, the guy may be having serious second-thoughts on missing the big train that is just a few miles away from home. I hope so, at least.

Though 247 hasn't "said" it yet, rumors are afloat that DE Sci Martin, Jr. has decommed from TCU and that (or because) LSU has been pushing hard for him. Martin's last OV was to the Tigers on Jan 22.

If true, this could be that they no longer count Fowler in the fold.

Gerry Hamilton at ESPN is now saying Fowler will flip to Texas, but Hudson will stay at Baylor.
I “liked” this post but I don’t like the Hudson part but you get to keep the like anyway for the Fowler bit. Next time be careful about the unlikeable parts or I will be forced to withhold valuable likes on your conflicting posts.

Riley Cole decommit tweet:

Not trying to be that guy, but it almost kind of breaks my heart a little bit that, after a huge life decision about where this kid is deciding to go for a higher education, he has to close out the message by saying "I'm not taking any phone calls from reporters/analysts." The kid is 17-18 years old for goodness' sake.

Don't get me wrong, I like following recruiting as much as the next person. I've visited this particular board at least 6-8 times per day as of late. But I think that just gives an insight to the harassment these kids have to face during the period right before signing day.

And this from a 3-star prospect no less. Not dogging on the kid, but just imagine what some of the higher-ranked guys go through. I guess that's just the nature of the college sports journalism beast nowadays.

EDIT: by the way, that was in no way a slight to any of y'all on here covering this stuff. You guys have no idea how clutch this board has been for me the past two weeks as I've been somewhat of a nervous wreck hoping Charlie can close out a good class. Was just making an observation, nothing else.

@Godz40acres in particular, I owe you a beer if I ever have the pleasure of meeting you :hookem:

Don't shoot the messenger, in fact I'm not even the messenger. I'm the messenger of the messenger.

I would think Cole is being contacted a lot because he decommitted from the national championship team, under unsusual circumstances. I'm sure some reporters would like to know more about what happened. It could make for a nice juicy story during the last week before NSD and after.
