After that barrage of recruits, we just went way up in recruiting rankings. Top-5 in one recruiting service's rankings and top-10 in all four of them.

The scout.com has us as #4 (Ala, Geo, Tenn, Texas, USC, FSU, OhioSt, aggy, UCLA, Aub)
ESPN has us at #9 (Ala, FSU, Geo, Clem., OhioSt., Tenn, aggy, USC, Texas, Aub)
247 has us at #9 (Ala, FSU, Geo, USC, Tenn. OhioSt, Clem, aggy, Texas, LSU)
Rivals has us at #10 (Ala, FSU, USC, Geo., Tenn, Clem, OhioSt, aggy, ND, Texas).

Not bad at all. Now we have about 5 or 6 spots left and have about eight 4-star guys and one (or may be two) 5-stars we are after. We should finish strong if we can hold on to everybody for 4 weeks.

And the best part is that we now have coaches who can evaluate and find hidden gems in the 2 and 3 star ranks and can develop them into NFL draft picks (4 and 5 star talents). We are no longer living in the Mack brown age where on the field success is directly derived as a lessor quantity (and quality) from previously perceived February successes. These recruiting wins are fun to watch, give us all something to talk about and provide more raw materials for our football factory, but the truth is we now have so much more to be thankful for.

The Rivals rankings are not very accurate. LSU is ranked 15th with 4 - 5 stars, 7 - 4 stars and 4 - 3 stars. Their average rating is 3.76 while ours is 3.37.

That being said we obviously have been coming on fast.

Rivals counts the total score of the top 20 for each team. As soon as LSU reaches 20 they will bounce right up to 4th. I have often thought that the average rating would be a better measure but that is not the way Rivals does it.
The average rating will give a great idea of where a team might end up after they reach 20 recruits unless they do not take 20.

I can see some logic in each of the different ways in which the classes can be ranked. So, I guess we should take it all with a pinch of salt.

Basically these rankings are for bragging and nothing else. And I like to brag when we do well in any ranking

If there was some sort of objective ranking for filling the talent holes properly, I think our class would easily be in top 3, if not the best. On getting the kind of players the coaches want to coach, and identifying lower rated players whose films look absolutely great and senior year performance don't raise questions, again this class is second to none. That is why I was not that concerned even when we were ranked only in the top-15. But the kind of talent infusion accomplished in the last 10-12 commits has been really impressive. It is effectively a top-5 class already if you consider all subjective items and not just the players' individual ratings.

Whatever the ranking numbers, we are pulling in top-shelf talent after coming off a 6-7 season. I don’t know what Charlie’s pitch is but it is damn compelling to these players and their families.

Imagine what this staff might do when we’re winning 10 or 11 games.

When we win 11 games, we'll face what other successful teams have--the staff goes off to other teams with promotions and splits up our coaching and recruiting talent. Hope that happens!

^^ You are hoping for anybody in particular to be gone like that? .... I am sure there are many here who would ardently hope to win 10 or 11 next year and then to see a certain gentleman becoming a head coach at some directional school, never coming anywhere near us any longer

There could be a few factors at play here. The first is that he may not have been as bad as rumor had him being. Second, he could have gotten better at it over the past year. Third is all the praise and hype given to him and the program over this past year. It's not small potatoes that the Commissioner of the NFL comes to Austin to meet with Coach Strong regarding his ethics and code in order to shape up the NFL. It was all over the national media and surely made its way into the households of parents.

His willingness to put his money where his mouth is and get rid of players, after giving them chances to right their ship, goes a long way too. It shows he's a man who does what he says and does not compromise the team for one individual.

His obvious and genuine passion for the game and his team is shown on tv all the time. He gets into and you can tell he cares. He has also gotten better at the whole press conference thing (with a couple of exceptions but that game never happened in my mind)

I think it's really a lot more simple. He's considered a bad recruiter when recruiting for Louisville and now he's much better because he's recruiting for "THE UNIVERSITY of TEXAS."

If the commits hold through to an LOI on NSD, looking a lot different than most thought many days or weeks ago.

Notice the group of #7 thru #10 (rankings chart at the bottom). Fairly even in 5 and 4 star recruits.

#7 is in the national title game.
A&M is supposed to be knocking it out due to SEC Brotherhood.
Notre Dame is ND.
And there's Texas with second year Coach Strong and his first true class (given one full year on the job).

There are JUCOs involved, so not sure how that factors in the grading.

Still digesting how this has been going the past two weeks. Or since Cecil Cherry committed (FIRMLY) on Dec. 16th.

At this point in time, I am more concerned about results then the number of stars next to a kids name. If years past has shown anything, coaching and program culture goes much further than just talent. Whatever the final ranking is means nothing if I don't see results on the field.

I have faith in CS and am anxious to see what the product looks like this year.

It's A LOT easier to sell anything when it is in demand. I'm sure Charlie is A LOT better in living rooms today, after the last 2 weeks of commitments, than he was 2 months ago. I'm sure his confidence is heightened and he can now show his prospective recruits that everybody who is anybody wants to come to Texas and look at all the studs who would be playing along side of you as we go win championships. Night and day difference to what he was peddling just a few months ago.

Our class rankings will drop about 3-4 spots now, to the 10-13 range now, after Burt, Louis Brown and Tim Irvin decommitments. But it should go back up again, as we have 8 spots now, and all but one (may be two) recruits we are after are 4 star guys (and one 5-star guys too). Here are the 10 four-stars we are after now.

DBs Boyd, Hill, Fields
RBs Warren, Brossette, Soso
QB Locksley
WR Newsome, Burt, Strickland.

Drew Richmond at OL is still there as a long shot if we can get him to visit.

As of now, I think we will get at least 5 or 6 of those 10 guys. We are at 23 commits now, excluding Merrick who gets a spot only if there is one. We can give 8 spots. I think we will add an OL and a DL from somewhere along with maybe 6 from the above list. That is what I feel at this point. Should finish a top-8 class in the end, if I am to guess.

[Plus, there may be one more dommitment, due to grade reasons, based on the chatter I see now]

any idea when some of these are planning to commit...esp the ones here this weekend.....interesting that we lose one on his OV trip..

The updated rankings show Texas to have moved ahead of A&M, which is pretty much for good, because I don't think they are expecting too many big commits at this point (though Mack and Lodge are on the board for them too, and they are still hoping for a Sheffield flip to them. Not happening).

Scout has us at #7 and aggy at #9
Rivals has us at #8 and aggy at #10
247 composite rankings has us at #9 ahead of aggy at #10.

I don't think ESPN has updated their rankings.

What a kickass recruiting job by Charlie to flip this around in just a few months. Just about 3 months ago, we were languishing below #15 and aggy had the #2 class in the nation. Remember those posts about aggy getting "yet another 5 star" and all that here, when we were not even getting 4-star guys in late summer? They all decommitted, and they were just sweating it till last night about yet another one decommitting

But Charlie!
