Lance Berkman: Future Longhorn Coach?

I like Lance, and he may be a good head college baseball coach one day, but I don't see Texas hiring him to succeed Augie with no head coaching experience. When Augie decides to retire Texas will go after an experienced, proven winner, much like they did when they hired Coach Garrido.

i wouldn't mind seeing him as an assistant coach under Augie for a few years and working his way up to the head spot.

Wow, a bit full of himself isn't he?

When they pry the baseball from his cold dead fingers.

Pat Murphy.

That piece followed an article on Sunday morning (5/10) in the Statesman by Kirk Bohls. However, there is absolutely no way that he becomes the head coach at Texas.

First, he'd have to have his degree. Second, he'd have to have a minimum of 7-10 years of succesful college coaching experience. Third, by successful, I mean a proven head coach at the highest level, Omaha. Fourth, he'd have to actually have contacts at Texas. Finally, given his not so stellar comments about Texas when he's been interviewed on camera when Texas has played Rice (which I will personally revive and send to the AD's office if need be), I believe that I can safely say that there is absolutely no way that Berkman will ever be the head coach at Texas. Maybe an assistant, but that would be the extent of his rise here.

Just sayin'........

I agree he probably doesn't have the chops to be a HC, but the recruiting effect would be unbelievable. Also, he has to have a ton of good baseball knowledge to pass on as an assistant.

If the University of Texas hires someone who has never been a coach to be the head coach, I will give up my tickets and never set foot in Disch-FALK again.

He can go somewhere as an assistant, rise up to become head coach, go to Omaha a few times, win Omaha a couple of times, then come knocking on our door. Until then, the article does not deserve comment. He's just another good baseball player, not a coach of any kind.

If they make a move that stupid, yes. I won't support such stupidity.

Just having been a baseball player is no guarantee that a guy can coach.

I wouldn't stop supporting the team, but I would be highly, HIGHLY disappointed. I have nothing against Lance Berkman personally, but Texas is the crown jewel of college baseball. We do not have to settle when it comes to hiring a new coach. This is a situation where we truly could have anyone, and Lance Berkman should not be anywhere near the top of the list. I would not have a problem with having him as an assistant, but no way should he replace Augie Garrido as head coach. Think about that for a second and see how ridiculous it sounds.

I have no problem with Berkman starting as a volunteer graduate assistant, then working his way to a paid position after he earns his degree, and then, maybe, ascending to the head job after a time.

But there is no way he should retire from the show and the become a head coach ... anywhere!

That doesn't make it right.

And anyway, Berkman can't coach here until he has his degree.
