The LeMond incident yesterday brought up another comparison that can be made. Bonds, along with a number of other athletes', association with Victor Conte is enough to convict them in the public eye; however, Lance's long-time relationship with Dr. Ferrari seems to be conveniently overlooked by many.
I think it's the same reason that Shawn Merriman isn't reviled for failing a steroid test: Bonds broke the two most hallowed records in American sports, and people resent him for cheating to do so. Lance just won a bunch of Tours de France. Winning that race is hallowed in France, where Armstrong is hated as much as Bonds is here, but it's something that 99% of America doesn't pay attention to unless an American is leading or contending.
If we had been brought up knowing the significance of a TDF record like we knew 61 (60) and 755 (714), we'd probably feel the same about Lance as we do about Bonds.
