Killing Rats

I discovered 2 rats in my garage. They both took off into a hole in the sheetrock.

I'm thinking the traditional rat traps baited with peanut butter against the wall thing.

Any other suggestions or ideas. This is my 1st time dealing with rats.

Two options:

Poison cheesebait, available @ your local "big box" stores or grocer of choice.
(or)
A ****-ton of coffee + night vision + an air powered pellet gun that you've sighted in @ 15 yards maximum.

If you go the night vision route, be sure to hook 'em up to a video camera & post the results.

i did go out there origonally with a flashlight and a high powered bb gun, but they run too fast.

I just want to get rid of them fast.

Traps baited with peanut butter. I've found the "crunchy" is better than the "smooth". Not sure why. I kill about 1 a month in my attic.

Whatever you do, don't use poison.

They'll either die in your wall and make a horrible stink, or someone's dog or cat (or a hawk or owl) will eat them and become sick at minimum...

I like the night vision and bb gun idea. Seems to be the most effective way to deal with your rat problem.

At my parents' old house, they had a "back room" that was a converted garage off of "the back porch" which had turned the outside into a laundry room. This was all done by the people before my parents and it wasn't done that well.

Anyway, the backroom became a storage/junk room and there might have been a bit of a rat problem. My dad would usually use rat traps. They did the job, but one trap got overlooked/lost in the junk.

My father found that trap (or maybe it was my brother) probably 6 months to 2 years after it had done its job. All that was left was a rat skeleton caught in a trap. I guess the ants and other bugs had cleaned that corpse off of the skeleton. Interesting.

Forget glue traps. Forget being humane, this is rats.

A plain old rat trap up against the wall is the oldest and still most effective. I didn't even have to bait mine, just put it against the wall where I knew they traveled and SNAP!

I got the traps and glue things. No results yet. If it gets stuck in the glue pad, then I will put it out of its misery quick. I just want these things out of my house.

High powered vaccume? Suck that sob out of its hiding place!

Seriously, don't use poison. The smell is terrible and you never know if you found all the dead ones in the sheetrock.

1. use traps (Baby Ruth works pretty well, or just good old crunchy p-butter)

2. seal the house. This will require, effort. find where they enter and use wire mesh, etc. to seal up the holes.

I hate the glue things. A tough rat can track around the house or room and you have to search for it. It may be dead, it may not. Screw that. Go death.

Yeah, I meant to say more about no glue traps. I tried using those. I found furry glue traps, but no rats. They will tear an arm or a leg off getting off of those. Just go with the trap.

I'm moving into a new house and I want to "rat-proof" it as much as possible.

Where do these bad boys usually enter the house? I've heard that they can flatten themselves out to a 1/4" which is small enough to get underneath most doors.

Any tips for how to seal a house?
