Kicker this weekend

AAS says a kicker is in town this weekend and is basically a slam dunk to commit.

Had not even heard we were looking for a kicker but with the loss of Lawrence and Bailey who were both seniors it makes sense.

If this kid commands a scholarship offer from Texas, that means we're likely missing on either Hicks and/or Jeffcoat. Not sure how we would fit all 3. Or this kicker can prove himself a la Ryan Bailey

I thought that at first, but we've got 22 verbals and can take 25 to count against any one year. We've also got to fit under the 85 scholarship limit, but recent departures seem to clear that hurdle as well. I think we can take this kid and still get Jeffcoat and Hicks.

By the way, there's several videos of him on Youtube. Holy crap can this kid kick, especially his punts. Almost every punt I saw was about as high as I've ever seen a high school kid kick and deep (generally 45 yards or more). Booming kicks. Every kickoff they showed went through the back of the endzone. His FGs had the same high trajectory and he looks like he's got the leg to make it from 50+ without having to strain to get the ball there.

I know it's rare for kickers to both kick FGs and punt, but he certainly seems like a good candidate based upon the videos. If there's one thing that concerns me, it's his slow delivery of his punts and kicks, but the height he gets almost negates that concern. That delivery can be honed at the next level.

Yes, a guy who can make the other team start regularly from the 20 after kickoffs can be very valuable. Just witness our struggles this past season in that area. How many times did the opponent start at around the 40?

I agree. That's the only flaw this untrained eye can see (I'm sure those that are kickers could find something else with his mechanics). That being said, I'm hopeful that something like his timing can be honed at the collegiate level to speed up that delivery. Otherwise, he could get some blocked.

Who works with our kickers?

So the question now is will he handle both punting and FG duties (assuming he pans out as expected)? Seems like most coaches at the collegiate level, and definitely at the NFL level, separate those two functions (my understanding is that the mechanics for one can mess up the mechanics for another). Mack seems to be in that court as well. That being said, he appears to excel at both and we really need both functions filled on this team. The need for a kicker is obvious with Lawrence and Bailey graduating. I think we need a punter as well, as the Rugby style punting we've done the last couple of years has been feast or famine (if you don't get a good roll that is hard to pick up, the returner has a lot of real estate to make a good return). I'd love to see someone like this kid did in the videos I saw that can punt for both distance AND hang time. His hang time was the most impressive piece of it to me.

Thoughts?

I also heard that the kid can consistently reach the EZ and beyond on kickoffs. The value of that capability can't be understated.

I was unaware of this guy, but he could be one of the most important recruits in this class if he really can nail the kickoffs consistently through the endzone. How many times do we sit there asking ourselves why can't we get someone to do this?
I know I have asked that question aloud many times

ut that was written yesterday and his coach may have been over enthusiastic about him coming here. See link below. I would like confirmation that is more current. It says his visit is here today. I hope we get him.

High school kickers kick 10yards closer than college kickoffs, so he needs to be consistently kicking it through the endzone for it to even get to the goalline in college. Hopefully he gets some more strength as he could be a great asset...that is if he committed.

What a great strat to the weekend.

Also Mandingo is his kicks are high and long with good hang time that gives his coverage time to get down there. Man I hope we can conclude by getting this one.

Seems to me that John Gold is a more than adequate punter. (high and long) If I have to choose, I would have Russ kick off.

Gold will be a senior next year. Taking this young man makes a lot of sense from a punting and kicking pov.

we kickoff a lot more than we punt. If I had to choose only one thing for this guy to do, I would say kickoff. If I had to choose two things, I would choose kickoff and punt, because of field position.

Field Goals are overrated when you're putting up 40+ points a game.

After we finally got smart and abandoned the rugby kick in the National Championship game, Gold did just fine. His kicks were all high, in the 35-45 yard range, and very little return.

I actually think because Gold got the slowness out of his system, he can beat out this guy for punter. That would actually make sense for the freshman to kickoff and kick FGs, and Gold to punt.

Then in sophomore year and beyond, maybe this kid does all three.

Imagine that, one scholarship to take care of all of the kicking, for three years. We haven't had one person do that in a long time.

In fact other than Erxleben doing it all four years, I doubt we have ever had one person do all of the kicking for three years.
