Kelson?

Go DK!

Drew was a good player for us, and made a lot of good things happen in 2005. Still, he was often injured (at really bad times for the depth chart) and has some weaknesses on the field. He has good straight line speed, but is not fluid enough in the hips for a DB and he does not change directions well. His ball instincts are not great either.

He is just to small to play linebacker in the NFL. Could he have halped us at that position last year? Maybe, when he was healthy. That was not often.

The coaching staff did not screw Kelson over. When you come to Texas, you get a locker, a set of cleats, a great education, and a chance to play if you are good enough. The staff did everything they could to find him a place to play. He got his degree, a national championship ring, and an NFL tryout. If he is good enough for that league, he will make a roster.

That was not my point at all.

The point was that it IS possible to make it in the NFL and not be a starter at Texas.

The difference is that Marcus has the athletic ability to play the role of a reserve linebacker in the NFL and fill out the roster as a special teams player. Kelson has the ability to be a special team player, but if he can't be a reserve DB, then he is no use to a team. At that level, with thin rosters, you have to be able to do both.

It is impossible to argue that the coaches did not try to find a place for Kelson to play. He was a running back, linebacker, and had two tours of duty as a defensive back. He was not getting moved in an attempt to screw him over or encourage a transfer. He was getting moved to find PT. His best year was '05 at linebacker. Even if he had stayed there, he would have little chance in the NFL due to his size.

I think that it is funny how so many people talk about how he was screwed out of playing time, and the evidence they use is all the plays he made. How the hell did he make all of those plays while on the bench? Is it not possible that the coaching staff used him correctly to the max extent possible (and he was snake-bit with injuries)?

Drew Kelson is not the first "tweener" that has not had their phone ring on draft day. Hopefully his ability and brains will give him a shot at making a team. If not, I don't think you see him in any unemployment lines in the future.

After he and Killabrew had their tryout with the Bears, I checked and neither was offered a contract. So maybe he just wasn't as good as some of us thought?

if drew is not an nfl player, he will be successful in whatever career path he chooses. that much is obvious based on stories about him over the years. he isn't "just" a football player.

Interesting. Well, I'll just let you know what happened to Kelson. Hmmmmmmmmm.................. Kelson was a number 2 safety and the coaches asked him to play RB after a couple injuries made the situation thin. After that year, they wanted him to continue to work both positions before asking him to also go over to play LB. After pretty good years at linebacker sophmore and junior years and finally understanding the position, he is asked to go play Safety (or re-learn in 4 months). Spring. He has no objections but when the first couple games come around he is not played although the pass defense is struggling. He goes throughout the season doing what he is asked has a minor injury on a kickoff, when he gets hit in the knee. Frustrated and only speaking to some people about his frustrations, he decides to just let it go and finish out his career because he's about the "Team." Instead of recognizing that it's a business. He relies on the great pro day he has but most teams needed to see more film at a certain position. Teams have asked him to wait til the beginning of the season but he has gotten a Jr. Broker job for a real estate company. He worked hard but just couldn't really get back on the field. Take it for what you may. Very close to the situation. Very.

Also, someone said he was a tweener. 6'2 235 when he was a linebacker and 6'2 220 as a safety. Saw him do a lot of things at safety. Closed faster than a lot of other people I've seen. I'm biased no doubt, but I saw it the way I did. He saw it the same way. Coaches may see differently. Fans definitely see differently.

I recently had the opportunity to visit with one of Andrew Kelson's professors and I was told that Andrew was very bright and just the nicest kid. His short term goal was to use an NFL signing bonus to buy his mother a house. If he's now dealing in real estate, that's probably taken care of.
