Answering a good question:

Murphy, would you deny that the election itself was a soft form of affirmative action? Do you think he was truly qualified for the job?

Sometimes intelligence overcomes experience. Experience and competence were hard issues for the Democrats in 2008.
Fortunately for them and unfortunately for America, the Republicans ceded the issue by nominating a vice presidential candidate who was inexperienced and sorely lacking in knowledge and historical perspective. Obama could look presidential and sound intelligent on cameras and in interviews. Sarah Palin, at that point in her career, looked dumb and in way over her head. I'm not the only one who saw her being a heartbeat away from the presidency, as truly terrifying and blamed her place on the ticket to McCain's bad judgement. By the way, I still think Palin intellectually and tempramentally underqualified to be president or vice president, but she's able to adress national issues much more adroitly now than she could four years ago.
