I asked a girl I had been dating six months if she wanted to go to a bed & breakfast in Hill Country. She sent me a list she found on the internet and some things she wanted to do.
Not really thinking about I asked her to tell me how much the total cost of everything she wanted to do was and I would see if I could afford it.
She went ape-sh** crazy similiar to what your SO did. A couple of days later I sat her down and explained that I had the money, I wanted to spend it on her, what I was really asking was for a rough estimate so that I could cut back on other things and not use my credit card or savings (namely cutting down on my twice weekly at the time pool and beer nights)
Although we worked that out, it sent up a red flag for me and I started keeping track of everything I bought or spent on her. After a couple of months we broke up because it became increasingly obvious to me she cared more about what I was spending money on than actually spending time with me.
On a side note, she later married someone who was rich & very heavily invested in real estate
