I am a total noob at CoD4 - just got it although I think it is an amazing game.

I am moving over from Halo3 for the change, and looking for people to play with and more experienced people to get tips and advice from.

Add me: xbl gamertag: Lord Yamraj

Any advice/tips will be appreciated!

my gamer tag is vtaenz

M16 plus red dot scope will be your go to weapon in multiplayer until you start venturing out and trying new weapons. Ultimately though you will always want one of your kits to include the M16 with red dot scope it's just that kind of gun.

Tip:

Always make sure you are behind cover when you decide to stop and figure out where the hell you are, check the map, etc...

Be wary of what you are using for cover, as certain types of walls cannot stop even the weakest bullet.

Once you nail someone from a good vantage point (and have been seen or are using a non-silenced weapon), you better relocate... cause 9 times out of 10 that dude is pissed and coming for your *** when he respawns.

Claymores are great tools to protect your blind side and let you know when you have an uninvited guest nearby.

UTMB, making the move from H3 to COD4 will cause you to never play H3 again! COD4 is that much better. COD4 is my crack addiction. The thrill of playing hasn't wained.

Suggestions? Never, I don't want you using them against me...ok I keed I keed.

Whoever said M16 and red dot is dead on. Best combo out there. On other boards, other players say this gun is unfair compared to others. It is the best all around gun.

I have stopping power set on perk two for all my guns.

move move move!! The most effective players, don't camp in one place. They move. But move smartly..behind cover, crouching, etc. Once you open the extreme conditioning perk (perk 3), use it to run for greater distances, especially on heavier guns like the M60 or RPD, or any sniper gun.

Think flanking routes instead of direct routes. Snipers play ever game and inevitably create route problems.

Use the noob toob (grenade launcher) early. It helps you accumulate enough points to earn the red dot quickly.

enjoy!

Listen.

Seriously. I can't tell you how many times I've busted someone in the face because I heard them moving towards me. The game tries to give you clues sometimes, use them.

As a corollary, don't sprint except across open spaces. If you're sprinting you can't shoot or hear anything.

I'm red foreman177 on xbox...Welcome to the addiction.

No, seriously. I loved Halo 2. I'm addicted to COD4. This game makes the Halo series seem cartoony in comparison to me now. I sold my Halo 3 within a week of starting COD4 online play.

These guys have all given you very good tips. I can't emphasize enough the tip about listening, though. There are so many audio cues, it's sick...you can also watch for shadows moving, etc. Also, you're very quiet when you're crouched. This is especially helpful when moving around inside houses. Use your nightvision when going down dark allys or hallways, so you can see people hiding in dark corners. Ny the same token, try to use the dark and the shadows to your advantage. Look around. Pay attention when you find someone who's hiding out in a dark area. How well did it hide them? Remember it for the future. If you're using an automatic weapon, try to fire in short bursts rather than spraying. This will help with your accuracy and ammo use...and charlieoscardelta is a great site...

All I can think of right now, but I'm sure others will have some great tips.

Welcome to the most addictive game since Crack Rock Bingo! Although I'm on the PS3 here are a few tips:

1) Catheterization, might sound gross but once you get online with a good team, that 2 min trip becomes a real nuisance about every 2.5 hours based on beverage/ snack consumption.

2) If married, find her a night job and/or sedatives and/or cease cohabitation. I for instance took a job 3 hours away from home and she won't be able to move out here with me until the school year ends...now if I could just find some way for her to work overnights once she gets here. :)

3) Define your own playing style, don't let others goad, push or rush you into playing in a manner other than what you are ready for. As a n00b it's not a good idea to run and gun, when you're weapons are weak and you're going up against vets who know where to pop you. Likewise don't "camp" more than you have too, there are very few "golden spots" in the game where you can kill repeatedly without someone figuring it our and coming after you.

4) Once you get claymores, do not expect them to stop an attacker. You'll make much better use of them by thinking of them as a warning device. Also I've started putting them in non-conventional spots vs spots they know to expect. Never plant them perpindicular to a door or entrance, always angle them. Folks can jump over a threshold and live through them, on an angle their screwed either way, but recently more and more folks are getting through them so heed what I said above about serving as an alarm.

5) Play hardcore, it's more fun and realistic than the other.

6) ACOG on anything sux! I might get an argument here, but I have yet to find a single redeeming factor about the ACOG in this game, even after "the patch fixed it".

7) Definitely check out charlieoscardelta.com.

If any more come to mind I'll let you know. I'm sure you're gonna get tons of help here b/c there are more than a few us completely addicted to this DemonDisc.

Happy Hunting!

So is COD4 similar to SOCOM? SOCOM was the most addicting game line I ever played. I have been waiting for the new one. However, if COD4 is similar, I may give it a try.

I really enjoyed Halo 2 much more than Halo 3. playing Halo3 now after playing COD4, it feels so much slower, and boring. I even downloaded the new map pack a couple of weeks ago and tried them only to get bored with them. The graphics don't bother me as much as the game play.

I've gotten pretty good at COD4 and that also adds to my joy of the game.

As for gameplay, others have said it and I emphasize, Camping may get you a kill, but will not accumulate points for you. I came across a level 10 prestige 55 gold cross dude last night that owned me. His game play was spead and stealth. He moved fast and didn't camp. What he did do was make himself hard to kill, by going prone from a running start, shooting, then moving. He also jumped left/right while shooting you, making him a hard target to get. He would find a quick hidey spot, nail you then run around killing all around him. He would then accumulate 7+ kills and rack up 3-4 chopper calls per game because his game play tactics kept him alive. He had a 50 kill game in one of those!!!!

eflow, I loved SOCOM too.

COD4 is close to SOCOM, it doesn't require as much tactical execution as SOCOM did, but the graphics, sound and fluid play (when the connex is solid) is totally addictive.

In regards to player movement (stalking, going prone, peeking from cover, etc.) I think the physical control mechanic in SOCOM was better, (and I really think the last Medal of Honor should be the industry norm with its realistic ability to lean, peek and shelter...but what do I know), what usually gets me killed sniping is the complete inability for you to move only your upper body and the result is you have to crawl from cover to shoot. It seemed like SOCOM was better for this.

The new SOCOM hits shelves in Sept (supposedly) but I would definitely keep your trigger finger warm with COD4 until then. It's truly addictive.

I'm hoping that most of the other TEX regulars on PS3 are moving over, b/c I've really gotten used to playing 3/4 hours a night with them and we make a decent team.

I used the term "camping" loosely. What I meant by that was in reference to some of the tactics described above (moving stealthily, going prone, etc.). Camping in the same spot for extended periods of time is never a good idea unless you're playing with noobs, no matter the game.

Also, there's obviously going to be strategy in every game you play (and knowing the maps is a universal benefit), but Halo allows a lot more "running and gunning." Even though, and I will have to agree with the previous poster, running/walking in Halo is a lot slower than COD. Every time I switch I think "damn, if only I could RUN".

They're both great games, but this "COD4 is infinitesimally better than Halo" opinion is not applicable to everyone.

BTW...has anyone noticed a surge in experienced players, even prestige level players, using the noob tube of late?

It's...shall we say...irritating.

Mandingo, glad to see great minds thinkg alike...as for the n00b tubes, I'm Guilty as charged.

It started when I got coaxed/ bullied into going prestige again. We play almost exclusively HC matches and my k/d ratio was dropping like a rock, then I figured out how to make that thing sing...now I'm a user, especially on District and Backlot.

It gets me a good cussing sometimes, but there is no sweeter sound than that "thmphf!...BOOM!!!", see x's and then have a report that two or more enemies just bit it...total gatification even if you draw sniper fire and post game berating...

I have noticed an upsurge of Tubers as well, and I think it's primarily folks who like me had forgotten how much fun they were until going Prestige forced them to use it again.

I dunno about the 360 but PS3 is seeing alot of GTA IV refugees. Also, I guess since school is out, we've got clan members showing up that hadn't been on in months...it's been fun holding Private shotties/ pistols/ knives only matches, but I think we're gonna have to split into squads since we're too big for HC matches and some of us (especially ME) can't hang in non-HC matches anymore...

Have y'all seen the same surges over there?

not a fan of the old school we played last night. I did enjoy listening to a couple of you think I was using a sniper rifle on crossroads when I was popping your *** with the DE.

Might be on later tonight than usual but I should be on around 9-10. Might be sooner.

I've seen a lot more players go with the noob tube/RPGs lately. it sucks. i am one of those players berating them after matches, because the noob tube is cheap, imho.

then again, i only went 1 prestige, and i have no desire to go again. i enjoy my guns too much.

I should be on around 5 (until the wife gets home). finished out my Dragunov marksman yesterday, on to the Barrett. I guess i'll eventually go back and hit up the others as well.

Yup...I'll be on and off at the "usual" times. Although, the wife moves in next week after school gets out in Houston, so I've got to start making it look like I've actually attempted to unpack and move in, instead of pouring tons of time into playing CoD4.

Noob Toob (sigh)

Got noob-toobed twice on Bog the other day by the same guy. AFter the second time, I grabbed my own, and hit him right in the chest -- so close it didn't explode, the impact just did it.

Made me feel so much better.

Snipers

I am mainly a assault / sub machine guy. I like to run around and plant claymores.

I am going to start sniping. Give me some pointers.

Is overkill a waste of perk?
What are your strategies?

Well, I have my best games sniping. The key is to know the spots where your targets will appear. I use stopping power and iron lungs. Claymores are also good for keeping your back safe. I think overkill is a waste, you should pick what you want to do for a round and do it.

Just find a place where you're hidden, then hold your breath and slowly move so that the places people often appear come into view. The biggest key is to get out and back in to cover really quickly. With Iron Lungs, you can also wait other people out if they duck in, then think you will have had to breath and pop back out.

Oh, and the best place in the game to snipe is on Crossfire. Stand on the counter on the bottom floor of the building at the end of the main road. You're almost invisible and it's really easy to see all of the good Marine sniping points.

Hook, the absolute BEST thing you can do if you are going to snipe, before trying anything, is to enter Private Match by yourself or with a bud and scour the maps for nooks and spots that provide good sight lines and defensability.

The spot Creed mentions is a great spot with both features. Another spot on that map is the "glitch"/ blacony up in the right hand corner across from the ladder by A (it takes a well timed jump to get there). But my best sniping match on that map recently was in posting myself in a doorway, on the "bus" side of the map literally on the main street between the cafe and corner car. It provided cover and visibility up the hill...I was totally vulnerable to fire from rear and side, but didn't get popped until the very end because like me no one had ever thought there might be a sniper in such a stupid place. I only play HC BTW, which makes sniping a viable alternative...regular not so much.

As for overkill, it really depends on the map. If you're gonna snipe Creek or Broadcast, you might as well go ahead and equip with something a little more hefty than an M9 or 45, because if you are playing anyone with sense they are going to be hell bent for leather to remove you (if you've got the DE there's no need). Also it seems that these days claymores are an alarm system, not a guarantee to protect your backside. Happy Hunting!

overkill is worthless. it's better to have stopping power on. Just pick up a gun from one of your dead teammates. I'm not a big Iron Lung fan because it means all the sniper rounds that aren't .50 hardly penetrate anything. With Deep Impact they penetrate anything, and sometimes even 2 or 3 people at once!

Once you get all your kills with a gun, try out the ACOG on the M40A3, it gives the gun 5 more hit points making it a 1 shot kill virtually 95 % of the time, no matter the hit point. It really makes that gun a beast.
