From Horns 247 Sports:
Texas head coach Tom Herman met with athletics director Chris Del Conte following a 23-20 loss to Iowa State on Friday that has Herman’s future on the Forty Acres hanging in the balance heading into Saturday’s road trip to Kansas State (11 a.m., FOX). In fact, Herman said he and Del Conte had more than one conversation over the weekend and the embattled leader of the Longhorns discussed the nature of those talks on Monday’s Big 12 coaches teleconference.
“Chris and I have spoken a couple of different times over the weekend,” Herman said. “Very productive conversations. I think he's right along with me in that we've got a job to do to prepare our kids to go win a game in Manhattan, Kansas.”
Herman didn’t directly answer the portion of the question when asked for his level of confidence that Del Conte is still back him as the head coach of the football program. Texas (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) was all but officially eliminated from contention for a berth in the Big 12 title game with the loss to the Cyclones, meaning the second-longest conference championship drought in program history is a virtual guarantee to extend to 11 years since the last time the Longhorns captured the league crown in 2009 on their way to a 13-1 finish and a trip to the BCS title game.
Following the loss to Iowa State, Herman’s record in four seasons at Texas stands at 30-18 overall with a 21-13 mark in Big 12 play. While that’s an improvement over three seasons under Charlie Strong where the Longhorns went 16-21 overall and posted a 12-15 mark in the Big 12, Herman’s current ledger is similar to Mack Brown’s over his final four seasons on the job when a 30-22 overall record included an 18-17 mark in conference games.
