JT Barrett vs. Tyrone Swoopes

Would things be any different if Mack had offered JT Barrett (recruited, by the way, by Tom Herman at OSU) instead of Tyrone Swoopes? I remember the debate on Hornfans. Tyrone, coupled with Jerrod Heard, were huge disappointments, not to mention Garrett Gilbert.

Those were some dark days for in-state recruiting for us, and not just JT Barrett. Ohio St also got in state kids JK Dobbins, Barrett Browning, Demetrius Knox, Kendall Sheffield and Jeffrey Okudah. And USC had Ronald Jones.
Just this 2017 top 15 alone is pretty gross to look at

The good news is that several of these players were recruited to tOSU by Herman and even Tim Beck (who was their Texas recruiter). And, as of today at least, they have completely shut down that pipeline. We closed the border.

Compare this 2018 in-state top 15 to the 2017 list above --

Everyone wanted to stupidly fire Mack Brown anyway. Charlie Strong and Shawn Watson would have tried to use JT Barrett as a pro style QB and it would have failed. We would be in the exact same situation and someone would start a thread complaining Mack Brown recruited JT Barrett.

Who wouldn't have wanted Swoopes after he led his small town to a 1-9 record his senior year? There were so many signs that Swoopes was, at best, a project, that it wasn't funny. Mack was just too nice. A Saban or a Stoops would have grabbed Barrett and never looked back. It probably cost Mack his job in the long run.

Barrett redshirted in 2013 at Ohio State. Mack was fired after 2013.

If Mack signs Barrett, he either redshirts or plays about as much as Swoopes did in 2013. Mack is still fired. Barrett is then plugged into the Shawn Watson failure offense and his career goes nowhere.

The only possible difference Barrett makes is if he redshirts in 2013, does not transfer and is here in 2017 for the Tom Herman/Tim Beck offense. Even in that case, he has probably failed to develop and is not all that great.

How does UT getting Barrett change anything for UT football?

In the alternate universe where we sign barrett, we are in the same place and fans are complaining Barrett was another “miss”.

Sometimes a team doesn't reach its win potential because of lousy QB play, other times a team wins more than they should because of superior QB play. Who would say the Horns have overachieved since 2010 because of stellar QB play?

My point is that since Colt McCoy, we've had a succession of highly rated high school QBs that were not college level material. My opinion is this has less to do with "coaching up" than failure to identify the potential. So what is the answer? I hope Herman signs a highly rated QB in every class, making no promises about playing time, and letting competition settle who plays.

If you stick JT Barrett or Swoopes in a pro style offense with Shawn Watson or Shane Buechel in an Urban Meyer offense, they’ll fail. You cannot have superior QB play if your QB’s skill set does not match the offense. Square pegs in round holes do not work.

FWIW, Boo played in a spread offense at Arlington Lamar. His JR year he rushed for 572 yards, then added 643 yards his SR season.

Granted, he favored slinging and was better at it than hoofing, but Lamar didn't employ a Pro Style offense.
