Josh Dobbs, the Colt Killer

This offseason, Colt was considered the front runner to hold down the fort in Arizona until Murray recovered from his knee injury. However, shortly before the season, Arizona traded for Josh Dobbs and released Colt (even though he has a guaranteed contract for this year). Dobbs then led the Cardinals to a sterling 1-7 record. This past weekend, Kirk Cousins goes down with an Achilles, and Minnesota is looking for a replacement. They were going to give Colt a tryout today, but , instead, traded for . . . drum roll, please--Josh Dobbs.

This is less of a dig against Colt than it is his age. Is Colt a good locker room guy and clipboard holder? Yes. Is a 37-year-old going to be able to move the pocket and take off to run? No. Dobbs beat the Cowboys... that's a "good enough" resume for a backup QB right now.

Last year week 11 v. Seattle--doesn't look to me like all he can do is carry the clipboard, and some scrambles, too, including the very last play on the video

The color commentator on the vid even said it out loud: "dink and dunk."

That game was 2 years ago, and I think if you look at vids of his last three NFL games in 2022 (0-3, no TDs, 11 sacks), you'd probably be more apt to take Dobbs as well.

I watched all his games last year (like I've watched all the games he's ever played). He was QBing a very bad team (that got its coach fired), and he still did not look washed up to me. As for the "dink and dunk," I remember one of the sideline commentators (Paul Maguire) saying the same thing about him in college when we were rolling over somebody in Austin. Moreover, I don't think I'm alone in considering it an asset to be able to get rid of the ball quickly when your offensive line cannot protect you.

I get the sense that many on this board would still ask for a 40-year-old VY over literally any other QB in the league.

My point is that "dink and dunk" can be done by pretty much anyone. There's a reason Luke McCown and Ryan Fitzpatrick made it so long in the league. Dobbs can do it too, regardless of the 7 non-Cowboys-game losses. He's 63 percent with 8 TD and 5 picks. And he's had running success. Not Josh Fields success, but decent nonetheless.

They're not really looking for a backup. Quarterback.
You're looking for a starter.
Cousins went down with a torn Achilles. He's out for the season.

They're not going to find it without giving up 3 first round picks. Hence the "let's just ride with Hall and Dobbs" camp. At .500 right now, there's this weird thought that trying to stay relevant and in the playoff hunt is in their best interests. It's not, but you can't tell the fans that.

Glad you brought that up. I also followed every one of VY's games as a devoted fan until I reluctantly reached the point where I realized his detractors were correct--a tremendous natural ability squandered mainly because he would not put in the work necessary to develop that talent. So, I'm sure you are correct that some here would still think VY can do it and that his demise was solely due to Jeff's animosity. But, I'm not one of them, and, if I saw Colt as washed up, I would own up to it.

Finally, I do not believe Colt is anywhere close to being preferable to "literally any other QB in the league." My only point originally was that Arizona chose somebody to replace him that has not played well enough to win more than a single game; and now Minn has chosen that same person.

If there is suggestion VY was not wholly committed I missed it and I read EVERY thing could find on him and Horns back them.
Is there a verifiable link?
I just remember him being all in

Remember him being late for the team flight (to Philly, I think) in his rookie year and the plane taking off without him. Remember the generally supportive documentary on ESPN also early in his career that, among other things, showed him arriving late for team meetings. Remember the final preseason game that he played for Green Bay in his comeback attempt where he had to call a time out because he did not recognize the play that was sent in and McCarthy looking perplexed talking to him on the sideline, cutting him soon after? Here is a quote from a Rick Gosselin piece, linked below:

"Then came the blow up and benching in 2010, his final season with the Titans. A career of missed flights, meetings and practices accelerated his departure.

Young signed with the Eagles in 2011 as a backup to Michael Vick and played poorly in three starts, throwing twice as many interceptions (eight) as touchdowns while rushing for only 77 yards.

Young never played in the NFL again, failing to make it out of training camp with the Buffalo Bills in 2012 and the Packers in 2013, then failing to make it out of the off-season program with the Browns in 2014.

Now Young is gone, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled talent.

What a shame. What a waste."

Gosselin: A look at the shame, waste of talent that is Vince Young's legacy

There's plenty more. Like I said, keep reading.

AZ wants to lose. That's why they dumped Colt.
They do have one of those owners who seem to be all about themselves. I have always thought people like Bidwill, Adams and a couple of others let themselves get in the way of having a winning franchise.

And I was only talking about his time as a pro. None of my comments in this thread are about his time at Texas.

There is a difference between UT Vince and NFL Vince. A large difference.

Just wanted to ttt this one because Dobbs is 2-0 with no picks, a 101 passer rating, an 87 QBR, and 110 rush yards (2 TD) since the change.

One thing that cannot be taken away from VY was Tennessee was 0-3 with him on the bench his ROOKIE year. He starts game 4, and that same team with Vince at QB makes the playoffs.

You can kill an employee's desire to perform. Live and work long enough you'll see it many times. My opinion is that's what happened with VY, Tennessee.

Can't disagree here. He was electric his rookie season. It went downhill really fast after that.

Nobody was a bigger VY fan than I was his rookie year. If saved posts go back that far, you will find dozens and dozens of my posts pestering the rest of you to vote for VY for rookie of the week and then rookie of the year. However, the seeds of his downfall were already there that year. He missed the flight to Philly, and there was a TV special (ESPN or 60 Minutes) extolling his performance that included shots of him strolling in late for a couple of team meetings. Of course, like the rest of us, I didn't pay much attention to those things at the time, but they foreshadowed what was to come.

A playoff appearance after an 0-3 start?
Obviously, I meant what was to come in future years, but if you want to stick with his rookie year, his passer rating for the year was 66.7; he completed 51.6 percent of his passes for the year; he had 12 TD passes and 13 interceptions; he passed for an average of 146 yards per game. So, yes, even though I overlooked (or downplayed) all those things at the time in my adulation of him, the seeds were there that season.

Ok, let's jump to his 2nd year. 10-6 record. That was Vince, too. Looking at that offensive roster, it reminds me how he lifted a team with sub par talent to seasons like that. That's a QBs job. It's not to light metrics on fire or set individual records. It's to lead a team . Few were better than Vince at that

I remember very well the back stabbing and sniping chow and Fischer took at Vince. Want to destroy his game? Mission accomplished, geniuses.

Again, I'm not questioning his God given talent, especially his ability to scramble and run like the wind. I literally worshiped him at the time. But in the sophomore season you mentioned he threw 9 TD passes against 17 interceptions. For his career he completed 57.9 percent of his passes, had 46 TDs and 51 interceptions. After the Titans, he flamed out in Philly, Buffalo, and Green Bay (none of whom was coached by Fisher or Chow :) ). He simply was not willing to put in the effort to develop that tremendous God-given talent into stardom in the NFL. Here's an article about his flame out in Buffalo written by Greg Rosenthal who concluded: "As the last remaining member on the Vince Young bandwagon, even I have to admit that the ride is probably over." Vince Young released by Buffalo Bills (Of course, as evidenced by some posts here, Rosenthal was dead wrong to think he was the last member of the VY bandwagon). ;)

Again, you can tear down and destroy an employee if he/ she is emotionally weak. Imo that's what happened to VY.

Stats, who cares?? (being as nice as i can). Dan Fouts rang up huge #s and had tremendous talent around him that VY didn't. But Fouts couldn't have led Tennessee to those records. Vince did. QBs are leaders first and foremost

I've seen it many times where talented co workers were torn down and run out, for no reason other than someone "could" or just plain wanted to. Sorry but you can't convince me that wasn't at play here.

It was mentioned on this very forum that Jeff fisher has a losing without VY as his starting qb. With VY his career record is on the plus side. Pretty clear "statistic" right there
