Former Longhorn Robert Joseph pleaded guilty to a felony charge of robbery Thursday. As part of his plea deal, he will serve eight years probation and do 340 hours of community service.

Jerry Smith, Joseph’s lawyer, confirmed the plea deal which was reached Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, former Texas defensive tackle Andre Jones agreed to a plea deal for aggravated robbery.

Jones pleads guilty

By Alan Trubow | Thursday, June 26, 2008, 04:42 PM

"Former Texas football player Andre Jones pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and was taken into custody at the Travis County Justice Complex on Thursday.

Jones, a defensive tackle, will serve 30 days in jail and will be on probation for 10 years."

Most important part!!!!

"Jones’ scholarship will be revoked because he plead guilty to a felony, a source close to the football team said."

I'm surprised there's no jail time involved for Joseph. Attorneys -- based on the language of that blog, does it look like Jones copped a plea to a greater or lesser charge than Joseph?

Honor student my ***.

Being an honor student does not mean you might be immune from getting caught up with bad companions and doing something really stupid-it means you are capable of getting good grades.
Sad episode, hope these guys can turn it around.

I had no idea Jones was still on scholarship this last year. Jesus H. Christ. And now he loses it for pleading guilty to a felony? Why didn't he lose it for "conduct detrimental to the program" or some **** like that LAST summer?

Wow....what a sad ending for two promising young men, and what an ending to what we hope is the worst time of off the field matters for the University of Texas Football team.

how the hell did they not get any time? what they did was utter ******** to those kids.

"It probably had to do with that innocent until pleading guilty nonsense."

If you're pleading guilty, you were never innocent. Regardless of the law, his school/scholarship situation should have drastically been altered last year by conduct rules, not legal channels.

So far, Ken Rucker and the rest of the staff seem to be keeping the kids out of trouble. Maybe Willie Nelson is serenading them over at Mack and Sally's.

Why the buggy eyes? Criminal law has nothing to do with whether or not a student athlete can have a scholarship.

His scholly was altered greatly. He was not allowed to workout, participate or do team functions with the team. He was allowed to go to school and that is it. He was not a part of the team in any way, shape or form in the true sense. Now, that it is over, he will not get to have school paid for.

If he comes up with the money somehow, he may be allowed to stay in school, however. I don't know that UT will throw him out nor that they could if he meets academic standards. I don't know about how that end of it works.

But the dental floss thick tether he had to the team will be severed since he plead or was found guilty.

%$#@(*&^%

What an incredible waste of talent. And at a time when we really needed one more great DT. Somehow I wonder "what if" he had never messed with Joseph or met him in the first place.

Hopefully this is the last stupid, lunkheaded, moronic move, a new recruit makes at UT.

If you want him to have paid for his education while the legal process was ongoing and he feigned his innocence all along, then you should have played football and gotten a scholly the way he did. As Red Five stated, this was by the book and the right decision.

Had he been able to remain associating with the team, practicing or even playing it would have been horribly mishandled. For an example of this look to Okie State and the child rapist who got to practice and play with the team while his criminal trial was ongoing. They let him do everything. Mack revoked his scholarship.

Had Dre done this while in HS and not having signed his LOI, he would have had his offer rescinded. I feel sure of this given Mack's record with handling things.

But make no mistake about this, it was handled right and by the book. Now that an end to the proceedings has been realized, so has the decision on his scholarship. He is no longer affiliated with the team in any way, shape or form. Not even as distant as he was this past year.

I guess I'm going to have to rip out the article from Dave Campbell's a couple of years ago where it fawns all over him for his positive attitude and school work.

I have absolutely NO sympathy for POSs like this.

These two losers got lucky or a damn good lawyer or both! They could both be doing some serious Huntsville time. However, 8 and 10 years is a long time for people like this to toe the line.

This was a sad situation with wrong choices being made. Hopefully the new recruits and players will learn from this. It is a shame. I was really looking forward to Dre having some great years at UT.
