John Chiles

Kudos, Kudos, and Kudos to Kchorn!

I back him on all his comments so far. He thinks "outside the box".

Innovative thinking keeps high grade talent from wasting away on the pine.

Naturally, the interest generated by our current (rather than our past) football recruiting efforts at Texas receives most of our attention -- especially at this time of the year when we're close to National Signing Day.

Given the original purpose of this topic (which was intended to provide an update on John Chiles' progress at the University of Texas), it also may be interesting to consider the reports regarding Chiles when he first was recruited by the Horns (two years ago, after his junior football season at Mansfield Summit in the Metroplex) and gave Texas his verbal commitment. Here are some excerpts (germane to this discussion) from three Scout.com recruiting reports on John Chiles (from March of 2006).

(1) First, John Chiles' father made these observations to Scout.com on March 12, 2006:

"John likes Texas, LSU and Miami ... but Texas leads. We were at Texas for an unofficial visit this past Saturday, and Texas definitely leads for John.

"John is a Texas-style quarterback -- he can run as well as throw. But for those who have thought that John was an 'athlete' who would end up at receiver in college -- we came to this (Waco) combine so John could participate in the passing drills. He has a very strong arm. I'm 6-4 ... and he's growing fast and could end up as tall as I am."

(2) Second, here is the Scout.com report from the Waco Combine to which John Chiles' father made reference:

"There was a clear Combine MVP -- it was quarterback John Chiles from Summit High School in Mansfield (Dallas-Fort Worth area).

"In case there were any doubts -- John Chiles is not an 'athlete' (meaning a future WR or DB), he's a quarterback. True, he ran an excellent 4.37 in the 40-yard dash on Baylor's slow fieldturf (there were only about a-half dozen or fewer sub 4.5s). And at 6-2 1/2, 195, he looked like he could play any 'skill-position' on the field. But -- make no mistake -- Chiles is a 5-star quarterback prospect.

"Chiles has a cannon for an arm -- the strongest arm we've seen this year (out of the U.S. Army, Pitt and Waco Combines). He threw rockets -- only the best-and-strongest of the wideouts, tight ends and running backs at the combine could handle his laser beams, which were right on the money, but blistering. And he made the deep throws with ease and touch. He also showed a picture-perfect throwing form.

"When asked to evaluate his own strengths on the football field, Chiles responded: 'My biggest strength would be being able to elude defenders, scramble in the backfield and still get the pass off.'

"Chiles showed that ability in the quarterback drills (at the Waco Combine) -- rolling both left and right, while maintaining his balance and footwork, and hitting targets down the field.

"The bottom line is that John Chiles easily is one of the top half-dozen juniors in the State of Texas and, in our opinion, is a 5-star QB prospect. He looks more polished and faster than Ryan Perrilloux.

"Chiles is the real deal and the next 'Texas-style quarterback' -- Chiles does not look like a 'dancer' like Vince Young, but he is just as fast and has a better arm (at the same stage)."

(3) Third, here is a March 27, 2006, report when John Chiles made his verbal commitment to Texas:

"It was no surprise that quarterback John Chiles of Mansfield Summit HS in Arlington, Texas, committed to the Texas Longhorns over the weekend. 'It's been Texas all the way,' Chiles said.

"Early in his recruitment, Chiles was considered an 'athlete' -- however, that appears to have shifted. 'Texas recruited me as a quarterback, and the offense there fits me perfectly,' Chiles said. 'I've been playing QB since the eighth grade. I play a little wide receiver and some at free safety, but I'm going to Texas as a quarterback.'

"Reporting a 3.56 grade-point average, Chiles said he is considering attending summer school and graduating early. He said he plans on majoring in business management."

[Note: Later that year, in his senior football season at Mansfield Summit HS, John Chiles completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,805 yards (14.8 yards-per-completion) and 24 TDs, with 8 interceptions.]

It will be interesting to see what happens with John Chiles in the Horns' 2008 football season.

kchorn, you just supplied a very vital statistic on Mr. Chiles. 4.37 speed says he has drag slicks for wheels.

No way he rides the pine in '08.

Appreciate the support for both John Chiles and Colt McCoy.

Here is an interesting observation from a Husker fan (writing today on the Big Red Network website):

"Who is this backup QB Chiles who looked so good in the Holiday Bowl? He looked GREAT!!! Hadn't even heard this name until the game, and pow!!! Runs the zone-read plays with aplomb. Mack has to get him on the field this year. McCoy is the quarterback, but this guy (John Chiles) is a playmaker."

As noted by several posters in these discussions, maybe "both" Colt McCoy and John Chiles can contribute on the playing field to help the Horns win the 2008 Big-12 Conference football championship.

We'll see what happens.
