Jobless claims SOAR

1 in 7 on food stamps, 15% in Texas and nearly 25% on the border towns. Texas spends 1/2 billion/yr on food stamps

That can't be right. Gov Goodhair says our economy is good!

244,000 jobs created, forcast was for 185,000.
62,000 of the new jobs were at McDonalds, jobs leftist during Bush derided as not real jobs, has that changed?
so if you subtract the not real jobs from the 244,000 you get down to 182,000, below forcast.

this is not bad news , jobs at this point are jobs but it isn't good news either.

and unemployment rising to 9% can't be called good news no matter how Pelosi and Obam a try to spin it.

Putting all the numbers together( huge leap in new unemployment claims , disappointing news on job creation, unemployment percent rises) and it looks like April was a disappointing month by any realistic person's standards.

great reason to come to Texas

it is becoming generational

yo
are the figures wrong? If so please show me where and support it.

I was going off the news 2 weeks or so ago that McDonalds held a job fair nationwide where they were going to hire 50k. Instead they announced they hired 62K

The numbes for the new unemployment claims as well as the numbers for the new jobs added and the unemployment % came from the BLS

Of course it is possible the numbers are wrong so if they are show us where.

Iff all the numbers are right would you consider that good employment news?

Mich
I appreciate learning that the BLS numbers did not include the big McDonalds hire. Perhaps I should have known the time period the BLS uses but I did not and it is not mentioned in the April BLS link or the Bloomberg Link or even the link yo provided

So I was ignorant when I thought April jobs numbers would include hiring done in April. Now I know better..
Thank you for sharing that information.

BTW a job at MickeyD's is a respectable job as is a job at Walmart or any entry level job. Conservatives do not look down on such jobs becauase as Gadfly pointed out the opportunity for a hard working reliabe employee to move up to better pay and benefits is huge.

It was interesting to read through the entire BLS link and see which groups suffer the most during hard economic times.

Maybe May and June will show increases as well and some of the 9% unemployed can get jobs.

The spin towards the left on this subject is making me dizzy.

McJobs= good (hey! I wanna start at the bottom....again)
Being on food stamps = lucky

Unbelievable stuff.

Fannie Mae reports $8.69 billion loss for Q1
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mortgage buyer Fannie Mae reported a loss of $8.7 billion for the January-March quarter, and asked for an additional $8.5 billion in federal aid.

Oh goodie

its not the position of the left that should make your head spin. rather it is the position of the right--the religious right. they do love to quote to bible. genesis states that " by the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat, until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; for you are dirt, and to dirt you shall return." this passage does not make it sound like work is some ennobling act as often sited by republican candidates for office but should be seen as punishment from this world view. moreover, did not jesus die on the cross to supposedly take punishment for our transgression? if so, then why do we continue to foist work on people.

i hope the left stays consistent with the view that the long march of history has been on the side of freedom where people do not have to automatically subordinate their time to labor and can truly ennoble their existence with worthwhile activities because someone had the time to create labor saving devices for themselves.

im not sarcastic. uniinformed summed up the conservative sentiment very well when he said that nothing in life comes easy. in other words, thats the way life is and thats the way life will always be. how does this thought that certain natural laws govern the outcomes of human behavior mesh with the conservative thoughts on responsibility and free will which they seemingly bandy about every election cycle? that is, the dole does not have to be deprivation and depravity. you can be perfectly outstanding citizen when you are on the dole because you are already a balanced individual. really, i think that a difference of degree and not of kind exist between people on welfare and a corporate executive workaholoic because they are rarely balanced people who understand that life should be about the love you give and not about the money you take. perhaps, virtue will one day pay, but i am more with diogenes who took up his lantern at midday in search for an honest man. take this job and shove it.

Even communists believe in work. Life would be great if you could sit at the beach all day and then come back to your house at night. Unfortunately someone has to make that house and someone has to bring power to it and then when you get sick someone has to take care of you. And when you get hungry someone has to feed you. And in your case specifically, someone has to make you a computer, provide computer access, write books for you to quote, and teach you how to read those books. Even when you die, someone has to bury you.

i know that the judea-christian movement speaks to people in different ways at different times, but i cant help think that people identify with it so readily because they live lives of quiet desperation as they feel eviscerated and self-alienated when they must only channel their energies along prescribed ways much as they must of felt from the time pharaoh forced charlatan heston to build the pyramids or to more recent times when marx wrote that nascent capitalist enclosed the land in primitive accumulation forcing people onto the job market where workers become dispossessed of the communities and values that they truly treasured. fortunately, a healthy person will ultimately transcend his social milieu and create something because "a musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to ultimately at peace with himself" as maslow once said.

No way. Obama said last year he was going to "pivot" to jobs after *** ramming us with another entitlement we did not want. Are you suggesting his summer of recovery didn't take? Are you saying his shovel ready trillion dollar boondoggle of taxpayer money had no impact? Color me shocked...SHOCKED i tell ya.

That's good... of course that still doesn't figure the numbers of people who have taken themselves out of the workforce - who simply have given up looking for jobs. That number put the unemployment rate at between 15-20 percent (I think it was around 15 last I heard).

It also bears repeating that holiday jobs play a big part in those numbers, although I guess the seasonal adjustment takes that into account. It will be interesting to see how January and February numbers come in.

Mich?
biggrin.gif

Are you for real? That is some creepy obsession. Do you have a job?

do you understand the BLS LOWERS the work force participation rate? right?
If you know this and understand can you really think the unemployment rate has dropped?

but thank you for your bizarre obsession
