UTSA HC, Jeff Traylor Tweets, "Dear @ NCAAFootball, How does @UTSAFTBL report Power 5 Schools who are trying to poach our young talent? How much evidence do we really need to make this not be a part of our game?"

Local news references sec & Pac 12 Schools making cash offers to players who are not in the transfer portal. They are allegedly offering UTSA players big $ to transfer. Obviously, UTSA can't compete.

Counterpoint: Traylor needs to quit crying about the new business model
How do the top programs get better coaches? they pay for them
Get in the game Jeff

Of course this is happening. Cheating is rampant. I don't even know why we glorify anything or anybody other than the fact that the game itself is so great. I hate cheaters. Especially arrogant, cynical cheaters. It's a game. And the most pathetic thing of all are fan bases who need the vicarious pleasure from the exploits of strangers and will enable the cheating, deny it's taking place and treat opposing fans and players with levels of contempt that should be cause for a mental evaluation.

Yeah that's what I think about it.

Now we're talking

It's ridiculous. Who can deny the greatness and toughness of players like Earl or Vince? Nobody. It's amazing and worth the price of admission. But the rest of it is a sad case of needing to associate oneself with that greatness to the level that your personal identity and worth is a direct consequence of the scoreboard.

Amateurism is a myth. There's not supposed to be a level playing field in terms of acquiring talent. Take a job at a school that can't compete with NIL deals, and understand the risks associated with that.

All true but is he complaining about a real violation? Does he have a point on that level?

The PtC letter (permission to contact) only applies to athletics staff and university staff. If coaches are really calling up UTSA athletes and saying "here's what our NIL money can look like for you" without the athlete ever getting one of those letters, then it's a violation.

My guess is that it's not coaches and staff making those contacts.

College football is a cesspool, it just is. If you accept that, then you tend to not get angry when you read about the depths many, if not all programs will go to in order to win. There's just too much money involved for it not have become a race to the bottom. Of course Karma sometimes rears its head as aggy learned this year when you light speed it to the bottom.

The NIL has changed college football to that of a new professional league and will kill programs with insufficient funding to compete. Think about that. In order to compete it comes down to money. No market cap and unrestrained free agency called a portal. Even the NFL has governance in those two areas of the game. (I wonder what they will have to say when studs forgo the draft because the money in school pays too good to leave early.)

College football has been trending away from players playing for love of school and fans for years and this is the final nail in that aspect of college football’s coffin. Fans need to understand that for now winning will be about money and those with the cash will survive; the value of winning traditions be damned. Just like the player’s political bulls- - in the NFL, NBA and MLB drove some of us away the NIL may do the same. The game has changed forever and those with insufficient funds need to get in line, in the back of the line. RAH-RAH $$$!

We get verbal commits, then they decommit. They sign, then they portal. It's all live in the moment stuff. You can't say, "We have it made." It's completely mercenary. In a sense, we should shut down caring about recruiting and just see what happens on game day, yell hook 'em and sing the Eyes of Texas. It's a communal moment for those who actually care about the university and wish to see a good game played by great athletes, regardless of their feelings for the university.

It's like buying a ticket to a concert or Cirque du Soleil....

Yeah, it's pro football. All that's left are enforceable contracts that prohibit transfers. And no free agency. You want the NIL money then you have to commit.

As for an athlete taking the money and not transferring then yeah, there's that. What Aggy did was a rush to embrace something that would make them feel good about themselves. I remember how Jerry Jones pretty much pioneered the risk taking in handing out large bonuses to players. As we know, in general, they are pro-rated over the life of the contract but accelerate in cap wrecking fashion if you rid yourself of a bust of player early. Art Model and other owners complained bitterly about what he was doing. Jerry grinned like he'd split an atom or something but in the end he was burned by it all. Apparently his son grabbed the wheel on that one and they have dialed it way back. This NIL stuff will eventually level off for the same reason. The players are even younger and schools will get burned by their immaturity and the difficulties in projecting out their upside and desire to work for it once they've pocketed the cash; especially players who deep down inside know they aren't cut out for Sundays.

This is America after all
nothing is sacred when there is a buck to be made
A lot of people like to play up the virtues of free enterprise (USA!) until it comes home to their cherished pastime and then it's a sad day
It was always going to come to this

I made a comment but I deleted it. It started to get political.

If Traylor is appealing to the NCAA I’m not sure he is going to find much satisfaction with that. Way too much money involved now, imo.

I think it has to become a contract situation so that these overtures are seen as tortuous interference with a contract. I don't know how much teeth that law has but it's something. And it has to hurt. And it should be a felony if the overtures are from out of state schools.

But the kids/parents won't like it. They want complete free agency at all times which is ironic given that the pros don't have it like that. But would it require a college players union and a CBA to force contract compliance? Of course, we do see players ignore contracts and go on strike so to speak.

I remember long ago Charlie Finley, the owner of the great Oakland A's proposed that the league adopt free agency every year for every player. He predicted arbitration would explode salaries. He was a Maverick. That would have been interesting.

But absolute free agency (right to work) in sports is a nightmare. We all have it in our careers. What's the difference?

There is zero doubt this stuff is happening across the country. If it goes another year without some control, college football is lost.

If Traylor did post this, FINALLY, someone apparently has the STONES to step up. He deserves plenty of credit.

Imagine what would happen if in addition to Traylor, Saban, Smart, Harbaugh and other high profile HCs + league commissioners (SEC!) got together and forced the NCAA to lay out and ENFORCE parameters. Or if they replaced the NCAA with respect to college football. IMHO, only if this happens is there a hope of managing this monster that may destroy the game we all love.

Pipe dream? It is, until it isn’t. There is always a way.

The monster are the parents and the kids. They won't want to be controlled or regulated. They will see the resistance from the coaches/schools as restraint of trade (or their attorney's will).

Do they have class action status under NIL?

Pretty sure he posted it. I read through the comments last night and it sounds like there were some accusations against aggie. Hope that we weren't involved but I am sure we play in the dirt like everyone else.

Local news said it was sec & Pac 12 schools involved.

I followed the Cowboys up until Jer'ruh upped his game and built the overrated haybarn in Arlington and all of his merchandising deals were put into place. His lack of effective drafts and FA deals each year just made it seem he cared more about the money than any more championships. I still watch them every Sunday but wins and losses just kind of hit the same these days.

I'm almost there with the Horns now. College football is just the NFL's farm system today. I'll stick around until we see a Buc-ee's patch or some legal firm's name on the unis. Adam Smith was the father of capitalism, wonder what he'd think about this bastard child?

Nobody except the kids & their parents supports the current NIL> For those that remember the TMPA, NIL is the NCAA's TMPA - limitless power with uncontrolled actions. NCAA is gutless and powerless. The BMDs of the MAJOR programs are going to have to take control, set the limits and conditions are college football will become an annual pro draft with one year contracts.

As for Traylor, he went public because he knows the NCAA is not going to do anything, and everyone at the schools that counts hate NIL. Of the 120 odd schools in D-1, only a handful would be upset by his revelation. It won't hurt his marketability which will likely result in him moving up the foodchain next year.

I am not sure there are any rules with the NIL. I dont know what the NCAA can do about it. Too much money and too many lawyers involved. What do you call 2000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.

I believe that the NFL model has either been tested in court, or Congress — who loves the perks — has insulated the league from what would certainly seem like Restraint of Trade. Same with most leagues.

So, if the NFL can get away with controlling compensation — at least for three years (rookies, right?), can it not be done for college football?

Notwithstanding the ineptitude of the NCAA, I expect that such a model will be in place for CF sooner rather than later.

BTW, who else believes that the brouhaha in the summer between Jimbo & Nick “contributed” to TAM’s meltdown? Hmmm…
