Jamarkus McFarland

I would love to see him here too. But what is our record with high profile recruits who don't commit to us early, or even a few who do committ to us early?

Maybe we should tell him that if he comes here he might get a shot at playing fullback in our jumbo goal-line package.

Seems like Chris Simms waited till late to commit and he was pretty high profile.

Of course there are always exceptions. I was just saying that our overall success rate is not that good in these situations. But for those who want to keep hoping for a miracle, have at it.

This is not a mumbling, half-wit kid. He is very smart and has enough sense to know the difference going to Texas will make in the future, after football, particularly if he plans on coming back to Texas. He has said that he wants a quality education, which puts us ahead. His mom likes the idea of UT. That helps. I suspect he may want to watch a season of Longhorn defense under the new coordinator to see how the down linemen are utilized. If I were him, I would want to see what Muschamp is going to do before I committed.

If you would have asked me 6 weeks ago how I felt about JM, I would have certainly been a little worried. I feel better at this moment.

Fox SW "Highschool Scoreboard Live" highlighted the Lufkin/Tyler Lee game last week (meaning they gave it about 5 minutes of coverage in their 1 hour statewide HS wrap up show). I have to say McFarland is a very impressive kid; not from anything they showed on the field, but from his interviews before and after the game. They also mentioned he is #6 (or something similar) in his class.

the list of 4 & 5* HS football players that made a decision with education as a serious criteria is extremely short. 99% of these kids will get an education that far exceeds their wildest expectations regardless of it being an ivy league school or OUesque education.

JM should make his decision purely on the program that provides for the best culture to develop his opportunity to play sports for a living. Reality.

I see your point, but if we had access to the track record of colleges that the #5-#10 students in his high school attended over the last 5 yrs i'm pretty sure an Oklahoma or LSU education would be on par.

Otherwise i'll use him as my 1% qualifier

I know if i'm his guardian & looking at his talent, I'm very satisfied with the educational opportunities @ most if not all D1 colleges. He is an elite athlete with good grades... not an elite student with good athletic skills.

Texas is elite in athletics/pro prep & education... but the culture of the campus/location/position coach/defensive scheme etc. will drive JM's choice IMO. Let's hope it's on the 40 acres.

I'm going to get a first-hand look at McFarland this Saturday. I can give an assessment next weekend. He's basically a B gap player for Lufkin to try and get one-on-one blocking in pass situations. I've seen him on film but in person always give a better picture and reference point.

• Rumors have begun that five-star defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin (Texas) High could decide by on his college choice by the middle of November. He is said to be tiring of the recruiting process. LSU, Oklahoma and Texas are his finalists. Most sources believe Texas now is ahead.

You might be right Pevodog, I only spent time in their Department of History. There were a few notables there. I guess it all depends on how you gauge education.
