Jada Terry reopens recruitment

I'm sorry to hear that. With Cokie, Imani, Anne Marie, Nneka and Jada, we were looking to be dominant, and deep in the post in 2013. And with Cokie and Anne Marie seniors, and Nneka a junior, Imani and Jada figured to be a pretty impressive tandem going forward. Hopefully she will look around and re-commit to the Horns.

Well, I was afraid of that. We really do need a post coach to help either retain Jada or find another comparable post-that will be hard to do.

Wonder if Jada and Candace are looking at the same schools?

Well, if I had to choose between Imani and Empress, or Jada and Candace, I'd go with the former since they are part of the 2012 class while the latter are part of the 2013 class.

While I do hope they ultimatelyl re-commit, at least there is some time for all parties to re-assess what is best.

I hope she comes to Texas but it doesn't sound good. She tweeted the following reason:

"because the new coach there didn't recruit me and she seem like she didn't have my best interest so I just decommitted."

Appears to be a Baylor, Florida State and Ok State battle now.

I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. This is a healthy process for both sides: Jada may not necessarily fit into Coach A's system and perhaps Jada may not necessarily find Coach A to be the kind of Coach she wants to learn and play for.

Yeah, where is that post coach?

Decommits would be concerning if these players were recruited by Coach A.

If Jada doesn't end up at Texas, good luck to her. The players that come to Texas should want to be a Longhorn, true at heart. Keeping Imani and Empress from bolting is a + to Coach A.

Yeah, not really sure what the second part of that statement means. Could just be a young person saying something in a way that wasn't intended, or perhaps it's something she heard from someone else. It's one thing to explore other options after a coaching change, just to make certain you're comfortable wherever you end up, but to say someone doesn't have your best interest in mind implies something else. I can't imagine the two even having that much contact yet given Karen's relative newness in the position, so who really knows what's going on, or why Jada would say something like that. It would have been just as easy to say I'm exploring all of my options given the change, and leave it at that.

Jada's statements seem to me to be the result of an interaction (either in-person or on the phone) with Aston.

The comment can mean a lot of things but all point to a selfish self-centered player that Texas will be better of without.

I dont see anything wrong with it, Jada doesnt feel like our coach would be a good fit then thats ok with me. By all means find yourself a program that fits. And lets not start taking digs at a player who doesnt want to come here. Everyone (Viper included) loved her while she was committed, so lets not get "salty" so to speak at her taking a different route.

Re: "...so lets not get "salty" so to speak at her taking a different route."

OTOH, let's not jump on a bandwagon that says our coaching staff should be running around dumping ashes on their heads and flailing themselves with thorn branches because some kid decommits. Not fitting is a two-way street.

WTF. While some movement with a coaching change is to be expected, I thought the whole point of the Aston hire was to recruit the top players in Texas. Now 2 of the 2013 top players in Texas who were already Texas commits have taken one look at the new coaching staff and want to reconsider their options. Davenport and Stafford had already signed, so they are legally obligated to come here. They would need releases from the university. Did they ask and the university say no?? Or is it just too late for them to bail?

How many other top ranked TX prospects are still in place for 2013? I hope Terry and Adams have another change of heart and decide to recommit, but they are exactly the kind of recruits Aston was supposed to be able to lure. Why did their high school coaches who all supposedly know Aston not urge them to honor their commitment.

What these events reveal that recruiting is going to get worse, before, if ever, it gets better. This confirms my worst fears about this hire. If you are a top ranked recruit in the state of Texas with options, why would you want to come play for a head coach who has never won a single NCAA tournament game, who has never as a head coach recruited a McDonalds All American, never had a player go to the WNBA?

The elite recruits in the state of Texas seem to be answering that question, and not in the way that is good for the program. A very rough start for the so-called Robo-recruiter.

Re: A very rough start for the so-called Robo-recruiter.

It's not where you start, it's where you finish.
It's not how you go, it's how you land.
The 100 to 1 shot, we call her the klutz,
Can outrun the champion, as she needs is the guts.
Your final return will not diminish,
And you can be the cream of the crop.
It's not where you start, it's where you finish,
[Give 'em a chance] to finish on top.

I know our new Coach will have her detractors at the very beginning... she should be given a clean slate. Give her time; we will then see if CP made the right decision or not.

A player who gives a commitment to a school in any sport, then withdraws it needs to learn the meaning of the words "commitment" and "responsibility".

If you have doubts, don't commit. The commitment is to the school not the coach.

I dont care what anyone says, kids go to play for a coach not for the school.. Have you ever been to college station or Baylor? Those campuses do not compare to UT and that was a decision I made when actively considered all 3 schools. So to say that kids are committing to a school and not a coach is a bit false. A good coach with a great campus is a pretty unbeatable combination. So I have no problem what so ever with them re-evaluating their options. Terry and Adams were a package deal so to speak so I expected one to follow the other. I do however think that Adams will end up in Austin, Terry however probably will not. I also dont think the expectations will need to be reset. Given KA's track record of getting the best out of what she has she will have the ability to win right away. And especially in year two. She will have 4 Mc D AA's and 3 other top 100 players. I still stand by the fact that we have talent, keeping them healthy was the problem. I dont know if anyone every took the time and realized that GG never once in all of her last 3 years here had all of her top 8 players healthy at the same time??? Thats a big deal. If our girls can stay healthy next year then I honestly expect to win now. On paper our rosters look better than everyone in the B12 except Baylor's, now what they put on the court will be a horse of another color.

Nice to see a few attack a HS player who made an offhand comment on Twitter, esp since she's still looking at schools and could just as easily re-commit to Texas as go somewhere else. As we all know kids say a lot of things on various social media, some of it spur of the moment and not very well thought out. I would still be very happy if Jada wanted to be a part of the program, and I'm sure the staff would be as well. She is the highest ranked Texas recruit in the Hoopgurlz 2013 rankings, and along with the commit from Adams, we had already landed two of the four in-state recruits ranked in the top 50. You would think keeping them would be a priority since in-state relationships, and recruiting was particularly stressed and highlighted during the new HC announcement press conference. I just don't think we should assume that either player is a lost cause because they're exploring other options; if anything it should make us more determined to keep them on board. And I certainly don't think criticizing their actions is the best way to accomplish that.

As far as players committing to schools and not coaches, just one more in a long line of ridiculous comments from the viper. Recruits make decisions based on a myriad of reasons. Obviously the program, and school matters, as does location in many instances. Some kids want to stay close to home and others want to get as far away as possible. And of course the coach matters, and in some cases even a strong relationship with an assistant is enough to seal the deal. And other players, or more accurately students choose a school for academic reasons; a certain University may have a strong department in a field they're interested in pursuing after college. And which of these things matters the most varies from one student to another.

I am seeing this different than most. Not sure how many posters have actually seen Terry play. I saw her play in the playoffs as a sophomore... as well as the other Cedar Hill commit. Although both were only sophs, I was disappointed. My opinion was that certainly Terry was the best of the two and it might have been a package deal. I followed the box scores all year. I was concerned that Texas was not going to get any better with her as a key post player. It appeared to be a reach similar to A Gayle. My take on the decommit is that Aston viewed Terry as not a difference maker and has not been enthused in conversations with her, Terry saw this and then came the decommit and revealing comment. I think it is a great move for Texas as now Aston can recruit a true difference making center. And Terry can find a team and coach that she can be successful with. And yes I do know bball as my AAU team has won the Southwest Region AAU Championship and never finished below third in 7 consecutive years. And am a college and high school referee.
