Real Sports w/Bryant Gumbel had a very good piece about Watts (in LA, CA) last night. The piece focused on 3 large housing developments with astronomical crime/murder rates. They were each run by rival gangs. It was so bad that a police outpost in the projects was firebombed.

The gist of the story is that the communities didn't trust each other or more importantly the police. To combat that a ~50 person team within the LAPD started a youth activity program. Cops became football coaches, basketball coaches, etc. They began building a relationship with the kids in those projects, even following up on them in school. The goal was for these kids to see the cops without their armor/weapons. Embedding the cops in the community seemed to be the goal.

The murder rate in these 3 communities dropped from nearly 300 in the first 10 years of this century to 4 in 2 years. The biggest change is that the community members were willing to point out who the perpetrators were which was a HUGE change previously. They did this because they knew the cops. It wasn't a secret that these were nearly 100% black cops.

Compare that with Ferguson. The statistics have been stated previously. 4 black cops in a staff of nearly 70 for a community that is 80% black. Michael Brown completely was in the wrong and by all evidence was not the right rallying point for this anger but nonetheless there is a pronounced distrust of the police force in Ferguson and many communities that needs to be addressed.

I think/ hope you know to ask how many blacks applied and were turned down over a period of 3-5 years?
this is a meaningless stat unless there was a policy of refusing to hire blacks.
 
6721: The issue SH is addressing is mistrust of the police within the black community, not the fairness of hiring practices. The statistics are very meaningful. I'm surprised that's not obvious to you.

I agree, the distrust of the police dept in ferguson is race based
and it is a fact that there are almost no black police there
BUT isn't it important to know why there aren't more black police officers?
Are black people applying and being turned down?
 
How many black Secret Service agents does the President have? Does he trust the white ones? Of course the Ferguson community doesn't trust the police force. But why? Have there been long term problems or is this a first in that community? What is the root of that distrust? Racism? Should only black policemen work in predominantly black communities?
 
To apply for a police officer there I would imagine that an applicant at a minimum be a high school graduate and have no felony convictions. Hmmmm.
 
It's taught to not trust police officers. The teachings come from others that had bad experiences that 99.99% of the time was their own doing. Yes there are cops that cross the line. But that is just a fraction. You follow the law and your odds of ever having any trouble with the police are slim. Most cops are not going to take a chance to throw away their career because of some thug. If I was in Michael Browns situation..........WTH, I wouldn't have been in Michael Browns situation. I'd have paid for the cigar. And if the cop pulled me over after that for what I thought was no reason at all, I'd be respectful and answer what ever questions he had for me honestly. That thug would still be alive if he didn't do what he did.
 
Part of black people not trusting police is the fact that blacks are stopped and arrested more often. DWB is real and is unfounded. Which came first? blacks committing crimes or police harassing blacks?
But it is also true that blacks kill more blacks than white people do
You also only have to look at the appalling destructive behavior of blacks in Ferguson last August and for the last days. Destructive behavior toward other blacks businesses to understand why police are wary of blacks in high crime areas.
In Dallas with a black chief of police even when a black police officer takes down a black suspect many race baiters still cry racism.
So I am not sure if an all black force would have made a difference.
The inescapable fact is if Brown had not committed a crime he would be alive now.
would a black police officer when faced with an enraged huge black man who slapped the police officer around tried to take his gun and then rushed at him feared for his life as well?

would the black populace of Ferguson have accepted the black police officer was doing his duty?

The fact that he's was already experiencing riots and chose to distribute the convenience store tape smacked of character assassination. Whether warranted or not, it couldn't have been done at a worse time. In fact, his handling of the entire situation and statements showed an extreme lack of empathy for not just Brown but the Black community, the predominant population he's sworn to serve.
This has nothing to do with him not hiring blacks but my opinion of his actions.

That doesn't seem to be a problem in many other minority dominated communities. I'm sure it's simply because no Ferguson residents want to be policeman. Wait...that may be true leading to the follow-up question of why?

That's the question many on this thread refuse to acknowledge or answer. It's all about these ner-do-well black kids that are causing all this crime. They should be arrested and harassed because the statistics show they are the troublemakers is the sentiment.

Unless we shift the paradigm to bridge the police vs. black youth divide (like in Watts) this is an endless cycle or rather downward spiral. The only way that bridge can be built is from within the community by those from the police force. Rich white police chief with no empathy for the population he's sworn to serve and protect has no hope of building a bridge because he's likely the party to torching the bridge over the previous decades.

A 36-year-old woman who had been sexually assaulted and set on fire died Saturday morning, police said, just over a week after she was found in a Wichita park with severe burns on more than half her body and cuts on her head.
Firefighters were responding to a late-night grass fire when they found the woman on November 14 and took her to a hospital.
Police Lt. James Espinoza told The Wichita Eagle that she died around 9:40 a.m. Saturday.
Cornell A. McNeal, 26, of Wichita, had been charged Friday with attempted capital murder and rape in the attack, as well as with two counts of arson stemming from fires that were set that day in the park and at a garage.

I think the black community need to change their efforts of preventing black rapist and murderers instead of worrying about a police office trying to defend himself against a huge thug that tried to bully his community. Taking a stand for this thug is pathetic. All of America took a stand when James Byrd a black male was dragged to death in Jasper Texas by some idiot skin heads back in 1998. This time the stand should be united against anybody that will defend this thug. Also Sharpton and the rest of those idiots need to just leave. He never did apologize to the Duke Lacrosse Team.
 
You are right, it is not racist to merely state facts. You can, however, BE a racist who is stating facts.
 
The posts and facebook entries suggesting the "black community" needs to fix the murderers, rapists, drug dealers, etc. make me crazy. I've raised law-abiding children who contribute to society. However, I don't have any impact on meth-crazed distant relatives. They and I had never much in common, don't like each other and keep our distance.

It's not like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Jay Z could make a joint video and all the black rapists, murderers, drug dealers, etc. would suddenly start singing "Hi Ho Hi Ho, it's off to work we go" and start college or craft school or job.

Law enforcement is part of the solution, but it's not a simple matter of arrests or gunning down thugs.
