I'm not sure how big of a story this is in the US, but it's huge over here. Basically, Pakistani men were luring and enticing young girls (mostly but not entirely white British) into sexual slavery and rape. And we're not talking about a few girls. It was thousands of them over the years. Few of the offenders were caught or even pursued, and when caught, they tended to get light sentences. And when people complained or raised the issue, they were promptly dismissed as conspiracy theorists and racists. Much of the political leadership in the UK ignored or even helped cover up what was going on. The justification for the indifference was maintaining good relations with Muslim communities - basically not being called racists or Islamophobes.
Of course, Elon Musk has raised the issue in the last few weeks, and the media and political leadership's big focus is on his "interference" in British politics rather than the actual scandal.
After giving this some thought, it has occured to me that this is a perverse culture, and I'm not talking about the Muslims. I'm talking about the white British, who are the majority. Why would police and prosecutors be complicit in something like this? It's because their political calculations told them that being called a racist was more politically damaging than covering for child rapists. What does that say about Western culture and its voters? White supremacy and white racism are wrong, but are we so worried about a flimsy allegation of it that we're willing to let child rapists slide? Really? If so, we're mentally ill.
