Is Hicks worthy of wearing #60?

I believe Hicks will be everything the optimists hope he will be: a presence, a force, a leader, probably an all-American. That said, I believe no incoming freshman should be offered the retired number of the kind of player Nobis was. (And I'm old enough to remember him.) Earn it. Best line from a great movie: "Earn it." If Hicks IS that kind of player, in a couple of years Boom offers him the number. Then it means something. Then, somewhere, Tommy Nobis is proud that Hicks is bringing that great number to life once again. And so are we all.

Who the hell makes up these retirement rules? The posters here apparently think they know the official rules.

I love it when we change numbers like Ricky wearing 37 in honor of Doak Walker. Wearing 60 is an example of honoring several of the best in Longhorn history.

We should do it with the next deserving LB. That may or may not be Hicks.

For those who think you can't or shouldn't unretire a number, even for a game or 2 here is some sarcasm:

"You can't wear 60 to honor the greatest LBs in Longhorn history. It's against the jersey number retirement rules"

SMU should have told UT: "You are shaming the retired no 37 of Doak Walker. It's against the rules to wear a retired number, even by a different school. You are dis-honoring him by trying to honor him, you retired number using ********."

I know we all revere the #60 and all but c'mon I doubt the kid is gonna wear #60. Kids these days want cool numbers like #11 or the single digits. When was the last high school kid you saw playing LB and wearing #60? All those legends you mentioned were before any of these kids were even born.

Sister:

You obviously know nothing about The University of Texas and what numbers are......

Also, somebody mentioned there was dust on jersey numbere 60, who in the hell let dust get on that jersey, fire them immediately!!!!!!

I'm almost positive Dusty wore #60 for the Cotton Bowl game only, against Mississippi State, I believe. I think #46 was his normal number.

Should we also consider retiring whatever number the kid wants to wear before he is even fitted for a jersey and pads?

Offseason makes me sad.

#60 is officially retired, but I like the enthusiasm and I am seriously pumped this kid will be on the 40 Acres this fall but let's give him a little time to get to fall practice and get his Freshman class schedule before we place these kind of hallowed Longhorn labels and traditions upon him.

It's way to early to be making any judgements on Hicks' worthiness to wear 60. Matter of fact, it's best to leave 60 permanently retired and honored, and let Hicks make a name for himself in whatever number he wears at UT.

It was before the jersey was officially retired, numbnuts. And the fact that a coach was pursuaded to let Renfro wear it is precisely why it needed to be officially retired. Renfro couldn't carry Nobis' jock.

Hey kid, do you want to wear a number that 5 or 6 before you were All-Americans? Don't tell me a kid would not be freaking jazzed about that regardless of what the number is......

Would he or should he is not the point, any kid would be jazzed to wear a number like that.

If I was him, I would wear number 10.

I don't care what number he wears. I just want him to blitz white trash mustache (OU QB) in the mouth so hard he doesn't get back up. Then I want him to run over to coach Boom and chest bump.

I've gotta post one more point and then I'll shut up forever.

Some of us are discounting the Mack PR and money making machine. If it's good PR for the program, is beloved by the fans, and brings cash flow to The University then Mack and DeLoss will seriously consider it.

Utilizing no. 60 for a game or two will bring positive PR to the program. Who gives a rat's *** what the jersey retirement bilaws state.
