Is Hicks worthy of wearing #60?

Jordan Hicks is the highest rated LB recruit since
Kindle and Derrick Johnson.
Is it time we dusted off #60.
The last LB to wear 60 was Brian Jones?
It's good to be a Longhorn!!!

The number 60 is brought out of retirement
for truly elite linebackers with the blessing of Tommy Nobis. It used to be a huge honor to wear #60. Maybe it's time to rvive this tradition?

I'm almost certain Derrick Johnson wore #60 at least once.

I would think if they thought Hicks was worthy of wearing #60 someday that Nobis wouldn't have a problem with that. This is also assuming Hicks would WANT to wear the number to begin with. He might want to make his own number famous.

Whether the number is retired or not, my opinion is you don't give #60 to anyone that hasn't even officially stepped on campus as a Longhorn. For all we know, Tevin Jackson could turn out to be a better LB. You just don't know until things develop on the playing field.

That being said, I feel your excitement about Hicks.

There was discussion about giving Robert Strait #20 when he was being recruited out of Cuero as an incentive to bring him to Texas. David McWilliams was quoted as saying "how do you un-retire a number". Uh, what he said.

Regardless, welcome to the 40 acres Mr. Hicks! You'll do just fine regardless of your number, it just won't be # 60.

Tevin Jackson is no slouch. His performance in the Army AA game was right up there with Reggie Wilson's and Reginald Powell's IMO. It's great to be a Longhorn!

"Is Hicks worthy of wearing #60?"

you're kidding, right? The young man has not even stepped on campus yet. #60 is a time honored number at TEXAS. We don't give this to anyone. They have to earn it.

It used to be brought out of unofficial retirement. It was formally retired and the number is displayed as such in the North End Zone. Hicks won't be wearing #60.

If the kid wants to wear it and he calls Mr. Nobis, Mr. Hager, Mr. Jones and the 2 or 3 other All Americans that have worn it, and they give him their blessing, then so be it.

I personally would be dirtying my pants if I had to call those guys and ask them about the number and the expectations that it would create.

Retired numbers should be changed to honored numbers!

#60 belongs to Tommy Nobis.
By bringing the number "out of retirement" it educates the younger Longhorns just who Nobis was and how special he was to UT and honors the guy who wears it as being the best of the best..
I am just curious if you asked current UT students
who wore #60 how many could give you the correct answer?

Even before it was officially retired, the unwritten rule was that no one would wear it as their number, but an especially outstanding senior linebacker could wear it on senior day, if he wanted to, with Nobis's blessing. Derrick Johnson did this in 2004.

I would have no problem with Hicks wearing #60 on his senior day, or any other linebacker for that matter, if they turn out to be THAT good. Something tells me Nobis would also like to see that tradition kept alive, even after his number has been officially retired.

Jeff Leiding (1983) and Brit Hager (1988), Robin Sendlein (1980), Brian Jones (1990) and Dusty Renfro. Derrick Johnson wore it against a&m.

And all of them wore it before it was OFFICIALLY retired. No one will wear #60 again, unless it is officially un-retired.

Let's get him on campus and see what he can do before we start anointing him the next great LB for the Horns! He is one of the highest rated lb's we have recruited, but he hasn't played a down for us yet. I'm sure he will be a great one, but too early for all the talk.

One of the dumbest questions I have heard in awhile, and I regualrly have to listen to criminals ask some pretty stupid questions.

Dude, you are in a small minority on this one. Johnson had 60 for one or two games his last year. That is the role of the number 60 when it was being brought out. Players do not wear it all season much less an entire career. The question just shows a lack of understanding of its place and purpose.

Dude

I suggest you take a deep breath and read the question posed.
Hicks could be the highest ranked LB we have ever signed.
My question was will he be ever worthy of wearing 60???
I still think it's a great tradition to bring it out as it honors Tommy Nobis and all the great UT linebackers who have worn it since.Nobis played here 50 years ago and should be remembered.
Like I said I'm sorry you don't share the same opinion and the fact that your job sucks.

You obviously never met Britt Hager or Brian Jones.

If the kid wants to wear it, so be it.

Nobis has come out numerous times, anybody is welcome to wear it. So whoever said he would have a problem, I would like to see a link.

If the kid has the balls, and calls those guys so he understands what that number means, then so be it.......

I think he should wear 10 his first two years, prove himself and then don the 60!!!

Or better yet, wear 20 freshman year, 20 second year, 34 third year and then don 60 for his senior year!!!!!!

I don't even think that Texas knows what the hell they're doing with numbers. I'm not big on retiring #'s, but for me the only #'s I'd take off the available list are 60, 10, 20, 34.

My opinion is - There are numerous good and great players that are deserving of special recognition. However, before you start attaching the "awesome" label to any Texas LB, do two things:

1. Take the time to watch some video of Nobis playing the position.

2. Learn what "awesome" really means.

My opinion is that #60 is worn as a badge of honor--it was "unofficially" retired years ago, only to be worn by the few who were chosen to wear it--if this kid earns it, I think Nobis (and those who followed) will have no problem with him having it as well--let's don't pull the cart before the horse and give it to him yet!

Mr. HIcks has the potential to be worthy of wearing it. I really would prefer that jerseys with maybe the name and number be put in a hall of fame or somewhere but I don't think numbers should be retired because there are only so many numbers between 1 and 99 and maybe 00.

didn't Mackovic offer 60 to a recruit from Mesquite around '95? the kid turned it down I think, and had a so so career, then transferred. And I think we had a really good linebacker turn it down, Winfred Tubbs maybe?

Bravehorn: Thanks for letting me spend a few seconds thinking about Nobis. What a football player. What a man. What a Longhorn.
