so it's a basically and apple netbook right?

that is the market they are trying to capture right? internet surfing/streaming?

pretty cool looking. but seems like my iphone can do almost as much.........

No camera, no sms, no adobe flash, no multi-tasking...reading internet pages on a monitor is one thing, I don't think I could read a novel off of a monitor.

Watching videos off of it would be cool though.

I don't know. It seems like web surfing would be better (with the big exception for the whole no adobe flash). But if I just want to surf the net on the go, I don't want to be lugging around something that big. I just think it's a toy that insists upon itself. Nothing ground breaking. It's not going to replace your phone or a real computer. Just get an iPhone and a netbook/Macbook Air.

pretty heavy? 1.5 or 1.6 pounds depending on the 3G model or not, I wouldn't call that heavy. My question and I'm guessing the answer is no, are there any USB ports or any way to expand with external memory? For personal laptop use there is very little I do that I can't do on my iPhone that I probably would be willing to do with an iPad when I need to get a new computer if I can access music and pictures from my external hard drive. Also guess I'd need to be able to download from camera to machine somehow.

Steve Jobs doesn't want you to compare to a netbook but rather to Amazon's Kindle. Apple apparently is thinking of this as just another toy not a laptop replacement.

apparently there is an SD card reader, it looks like a really cool toy that I'd like to have to surf the internet while watching TV or while on vacation but not going to happen unless someone gives it to me as a gift.

How much trouble would it be to get a dvd I currently own on to its flash drive?

The lack of multi-tasking and flash is highly disturbing. How do you make something that is designed to be used on the internet and not have flash? How would you watch the videos?

So you can surf the web, listen to music, download apps and e-mail, but you can't make calls? Sounds like a big iPhone to me.

calls can be made, there is a 3G version available. I have not ready anywhere about being tied to any particular network or any contracts tho.

I think it's spec'd pretty reasonably for a first generation device. Apple needs to see what the market will be like for this thing, and I suspect they wanted to get something out the door and into customers' hands rather than trying to load it with many more features. The first iPhone didn't even have copy-n-paste, but when they delivered that functionality they did it really well.

I like that they have their own chip in it, from the PA Semi acquisition, so this reduces their supply chain dependencies a bit. Subsequent iPad models will be much improved, I think, as the market feedback comes in and they know what people need. Surprised not to see a USB port on it though.

there will be a 3G model out 30 days after the wi-fi version is released. that means april for the wi-fi and may for the 3G phone version.

no built in usb, it has a 30 pin connector and a 3.5 stereo headphone jack. with the 30 pin connector you can use an adapter that will allow you hook into other devices like a camera using a usb cable which goes into the adapter, like the iphone. it also has an SIM card tray.

it had a 30 pin dock dock with stand which will allow you use it like a desktop and use a bluetooth keyboard when you have a lot of typing and dont want to use a virtual keyboard.

As far as the carrier, while the iphone will be open to verizon later this year, the ipad will be initially be limited to at&t. i would have preferred the name "islate" instead of "ipad".

the only negative to me is that apple still hasn't ended the feud with adobe over the use of flash. html5 may end up taking over for flash but not for a while. and in the meantime, that is my biggest problem with my iphone. i wouldn't have any other phone however despite that limitation. i think the pricing is great.

Great pricing, but the limitations will have to be addressed quick.

I would really like to see this become a viable primary device. You walk into the house, and instantly syncs up with the home network further enriching its functionality type of thing.

The battery life is simply outstanding btw.

Skype? Seems like the only way to make calls is on speakerphone so you might as well add a camera looking in the same direction as the screen (or both ways). But no, Apple has their heads so far up their asses that they can't bother to look at anything they haven't created. If you have an iphone, it's just a bigger bulkier waste of money. The only real application I could see it being useful for is using it with SlingBox to watch TV on (since it doesn't have a DVD player).

Just found out that the only apps it will run can be purchased at the local neighborhood App Store.

That pretty much seals the deal for me. Until they put a real OS in the thing, I'll never consider it. I really really wanted this thing to be a great primary device, but the more I find out about it, the less sense it makes.

The key for Apple was to hit a low price point and they've done that. Who wasn't shocked to see it at $499? They traded off some hardware features to do it such as a camera and GPS, but hitting the price point was critical. The user model is the same as an iPhone/iPod touch, just with a bigger screen and more performance. The App Store and proprietary low power CPU are huge advantages that will make it very difficult for competitors to have any chance of catching up.

I've been critical, but it does have some positives:

It's beautiful
It looks awesome to watch movies/videos on...forget portable dvd players
The battery life, if it's really 10 hours for normal usage is amazing
It's expensive, but not too expensive. My guess is they could deliver on price because they didn't have to spend a lot of R&D. All the tech (except for the processor which seems very simple) was all off the shelf...it's just a big *** iPod Touch.

But again, it's not a phone, so you'll still have a cell. And if your phone is an iPhone...you already have a better portable music player than the iPad. It's not going to replace your notebook computer. And if you're a Kindle/Nook user, a serious reader, the iPad with a backlit monitor isn't designed for serious reading.

What is it then? It's the answer to the question no one asked. And since it's the answer to the question no one asked...when you whip this sucker out on the subway, you'll look like that smug douche who gives you an answer to the question you never asked. You'll look like Hipster Moses carrying the tablet of the Hipster Ten Commandments.

I'm a loyal Apple customer, but I think this one goes the way of the Cube, iTunes Phone, and the Newton. And if you're a shareholder that's okay, because for every 3 or so iMacs and iPods and iTunes you're gonna have a Cube and a Newton. It's part of the creative process. When you stop being innovative and daring and taking risk you're gonna lose your advantage. It's just unrealistic to expect to launch a winner every single time.

cheap replacement for those Creston type touch screen devices to control components, media center, lights, climate, etc. Then to replace all the paper mags and newspapers(not books) and to do light surfing like coming here while watching games. Perfect living room device and nothing else. If there are apps for that, I'm in.

This is just the third sku of the iPhone (iPhone, iTouch and now iPad). All non-Apple apps will be sandboxed and purchased through iTunes.

The problem is it's not a computer, it is not a phone, it is not portable gaming device, it is not a particularly good eBook reader, so what is it and who is it for? It does a whole bunch of things in a half-assed to acceptable manner, but I can't really see what it is going to do better than any of the other devices I already have which include the iPhone.

I was excited about seeing Apple's take on the tablet computer, and I don't feel like this qualifies as an answer to that question.

Seems like the list of what the ipad is not is longer than the list of what the ipad is. Meh.

I love apple but this seems kinda half-baked to me.
