Interesting Interview with Sark

Disagree. He didn't "cave" in KC and lost his job. His belief that his plan was infallible, coupled with his "abandoning" his team to "be alone" pacing between the bench & stadium wall (Rice & UVA) did little to inspire confidence.

That's ok because Willie Cunningham thought he was great in spite of being forewarned by several former players
Mackovic gets credit for bringing Texas offense into the modern day, using the forward pass as an integral weapon instead of an occasional "gotcha" play. There isn't a lot to like about him, but doing that was important. Also, he recruited some dreadlocked running back out of San Diego who turned out kind of OK.

I’m expecting the defense to be better this year, and it should have to do with a modified scheme, better suited for the personnel, and the second year in a
new culture. I also believe the talent has been upgraded, but not significantly.

Some of the analysts that I respect believe that PK didn’t modify his system for the obvious deficiencies: no outside rush and a very weak second level. Unfortunately, most of those same deficiencies are going to exist this year as well. I believe that if you understand your weaknesses and game plan around them, the odds of having a better outcome are reasonably high. However, we just don’t know. We’re going to learn a heckuva lot on September 10th, and it might not be pretty.

Let me add that while we lack elite players, Alfred Collins has the potential to be special. So does Byron Murphy. I think that Watts will be an upgrade and a stabilizing force, and we all continue to hear very good things about Jahdae Barron at nickel.

And this is my primary concern. We could rack up 500+ ypg with Robinson and Worthy and whoever else, but if the opponent is going to be matching it, then losing 55-48 is no different in the grand scheme of conference standings than losing 10-3.

Guys like Collins are going to have to earn back the hype accolades. Great Alamo Bowl? Yay. But he then parlayed it into a big pile of 2 sacks and 4 hurries for the entire 2021 season. There was a time when 2 sacks and 4 hurries would make you a third stringer, not the second coming.

I wouldn't be surprised if guys like Finkley and Tapp just showed up and said "oh you guys need pass rushing? Well ok." and outperform all the returners. Growing pains for sure.

Mackovic had a really good offensive mind, but always thought he and his plan were infallible. He NEVER made adjustments. When Rick Lantz' defense destroyed Ricky & our offense, Rick asked me, "Why won't he ever make an adjustment".

As for Ricky, I have always given Bernstein credit for reeling him in. Bernstein couldn't coach his way out of a brown paper bag, but he did land some quality recruits.

Rick was DC at UVA with George Welsh. Prior to that, he built the defenses for Schnellenberger at Loserville and Convict Gables, making a stop between them with the Patriots. Rick remains the only DC to ever successfully change his entire defense for a single game; that being when his defense beat FSU in C'ville for FSU's first ever ACC loss. Most impressive part of that game was the last play. Rick had them so schooled on Coach Bowden's offense that when FSU lined up, the ILB Jones started yelling, "get Warrick". Sure enough, FSU ran the wildcat with direct snap to Warrick Dunn, and the play got stopped at the goal line.

He never has let me forget that he got assistance that week from a couple of phone calls with Gary Darnell, because he knew my feelings about Darnell and his coaching ability.

I think I've told you the story about Rick telling Mack Brown & Greg Davis, "You're not ******* good enough, bring it on" during the fourth quarter.

If we hadn't gotten Mackovic, likely no Mack Brown, and we would still be waiting for a NC.

Maybe we would have gotten Saban....

It's an interesting thing to think of who was available (or willing) in 1991-92. Bill Lewis was highly regarded for his UGA and East Carolina jobs and I vaguely remember someone talking about him to replace McWilliams.

hic
We probably don't want to know how close we were to getting Saban.
What could have been.:brickwall:

But this is here and now and I think we are beginning a newl era with a special coach.

How in the world is Sark going to satisfy Worthy, Hall, neyar?, wittington, Sanders, Billingsley, B Robinson, K Robinson since there is only one football?
Maybe, every once in a while, we handoff the ball to b Robinson then he flips the ball to Neyar coming on an end around and then he throws the ball downfield to Worthy

Score lots of points and have Patterson make sure K understands those great words from Steve Spurrier to Bob Stoops, "Your job is to get me back the ball"

Perhaps get first downs that might help

Some reasonably smart folks are of the opinion that Collins was misused last year, and constrained. Perhaps his job was to lock up blockers so that the LBs could make the plays. That’s one school of thought. If so, that was a poor use of his skills, and a terrible strategy given that our LB talent was subpar, to be kind.

Yes but it’s nice to now worry how UTs going to get the ball to multiple playmakers.
It’s been awhile.
