Intentional Farting = Detention

Wow. I'm a teacher in high school and had to deal with this a few weeks ago. Intent is proved when the same person keeps farting. The first time he did it, I thought perhaps he had bad gas and couldn't control himself. But when he did it again a few days later, I believe I was reasonable in assuming that he was doing it on purpose.

So I took him out in the hall and threatened him with detention. His argument was, farting is natural, how can you penalize me for doing something natural? My argument was, our mission is to teach you not just the curriculum but how to behave in society in such a way as to increase the odds of your becoming a successful person.

He hasn't farted since - or at least not out loud anyway.

I guess none of these kids are going to be astronauts when they grow up.

What a load of crap! Something is rotten at that school, there's a stench of intolerance for natural bodily functions.

And Captain Murphy, what you should have taught the kid is the art of the silent fart... And crop dusting. Useful talents once he IS out in th ereal world...

What happened to the good ole days when kids were embarrassed of their bodily functions?

Nobody ever wanted to admit it was them that farted back in the day.

Can you argue that it was not intentional because you farted outside of your pocket and there were elligible receivers in the vicinity?

That's going to be awesome when someone suspends some kid, and the parent gets mad and demands a conference. Then in the conference the parent keeps farting.

What if instead of an intentional fart, the student farted when he had actual, subjective awareness of said pending fart, but nevertheless farted with conscious indifference to the rights, safety, and welfare of others?

Does that get detention?

No, because he's not farting on purpose.

It sounds, given your lawyerly hypo, that the person DID do it on purpose, he just didn't care that he did it or care about the outcome of his actions.

People, I'm disappointed. Nobody has taken the opportunity to use the vocabulary word I introduced here. C'mon people, learn it, love it, use it.
