In My Crystal Ball

TCU will be very telling. How many kids does Patterson have that could start for us on paper? How many could make the travel roster on paper?

Yet, he continues to do more with less, while we do less with more.

:hookem2:
How long has Patterson been with TCU? How many years has he been running his program there?

I'm sorry, but continuity counts for a pretty fair amount, and our program continuity is about as bad as it has ever been. We are far too impatient with our coaching staff these days. Hell, McWilliams got 5 or 6 years? Mackovick got 5 or 6 also? I get firing Charlie after three historically bad seasons, but I don't get the calls for Tom's head occurring already, nor do I understand the people who, while not outright calling for his head, have already concluded Tom's going to be a failure here.

For about the 3rd time since the Sat. debacle, I re-watched the MD game.

That pathetic opening drive 3 and out by the O absolutely sucked!

Certainly a win-able game, but so many mistakes. > 100 yards in penalties, critical turnovers, poor execution, terrible throws, poor play calling. I'm hopeful that some of these elements are somewhat typical of the first game of the season and can be addressed, adjusted, corrected for game 2 and beyond. However, my thoughts are haunted by last season, SE and TH.

So I'm sticking with my most recent crystal ball prediction of 6-6.

Worster Man I feel your angst about the offense.............but once again I assert that if the defense shows up just a little in that 1st 22 minutes of the game we win offensive warts and all...........24 points by the unit that was SUPPOSED to be our strongpoint............if you need to question a coach, question Orlando.....this is 2 years running that his defense has SUCKED coming out of the gate.

SN,

Yes continuity helps, but Patterson has also had complete turnovers in his coaching staff. More important than continuity is culture. Strong was never a cultural match for The University of Texas, not because of race, but rather philosophy and personality. David got extra time because "he was one of us".

The "committee of 300" warned with explicit details the problems at every stop on Mackovic's trail of terror. Little Willie Cunningham did that to The University, with NO support or input from anyone.

I wanted Herman, and totally supported his hiring. Bill Yoeman was a great coach, who did more with unknown recruits, but he always lost at least one every year that he was supposed to win. That doesn't happen at Texas, or at least it isn't supposed to.

Herman's arrogance has gotten him on the hotseat more than W-L. Someone needs to tell him the story of Lynn Amadee, and that throwing our kids under the bus rather than taking responsibility gets you a ticket on that bus.

As an old banker, I have always told people that I can train a monkey to loan money, I can't train his personality. Embrace the culture of The University of Texas or Southwest has a flight out of Austin every 20 minutes, pick one and get on it.

Good point, if it was on paper, we would win by double digits. What is means is, Patterson will kick our *** once again, because his team will be better prepared, better coached, better schemed, while being less talented.

Yes...yes...teams, and units, trying to build confidence obviously play looser and better typically without the pressure of being behind.
Most of us said a good start was key and the D didn't bring it. Though we tied it with one big play...the pressure was on the O from the word go. Had to feel like dejavu on the field.

Though I support TH and have defended him some, this is a great post, Sabre.

No, no, Sabre. Herman said emphatically in his pregame speech last week that Texas is the best trained team in America. He said it 2 or 3 times.

So, he must be right.

What I'm concerned about right now...especially with Big12 play ahead...
is secondary depth and experience. We are an injury or two away from a much tougher road...as recent scares show.

Interestingly, this article appeared on ESPN this morning: Why TCU-Ohio State sizzles while Texas-USC fizzles

Part of it is paywalled, but check this out:

anonymous Big 12 coach said:
When I was looking at Texas' personnel, I thought there were four, maybe five guys at Texas who could play for TCU.

Now, one quote from one coach who served in the Big 12 doesn't prove anything. But it's worth noting. I think most of "almost nobody on those rosters would start here" stuff comes from automatically assuming our guys are generally going to be better because we're Texas, not from an objective look at the rosters.

Agree 100%. This "We're Texas" crap needs to go away until it's earned back. And that's not the fans responsibility.

I have been saying for several years to take "TEXAS" off the front of the jerseys and the Longhorn off the helmets until they start playing like Texas.

As far as the former coach, TCU's kids weren't better coming out of HS. Patterson, et al coaches those kids up, while whomever is in Neuhaus Royal seems to coach em down.
