Amazing pictures coming out of Galveston. 12 hours before the hurricane makes landfall and the waves are almost to the top of the seawall, which I believe is up to 15 feet above normal sea level.

I've boarded up a handful of windows here north of the Heights in Houston. Planning on retreating with my dogs to my bedroom if necessary tonight.

Its pretty incredible. Waves are blasting the sea wall and rising 3 stories already. Unfortunately, Galveston looks to get wiped out.
On channel 2 they interviewed a guy who said that he is staying close by because he likes the energy of the storm and is a surfer and isnt afraid to die.

Judge in Galveston County is sporting the Horns.

the news hypes up every weather or natural disaster event, especially hurricanes, but i can't help to feel that ike is going to be something really bad for a lot of people.

watching the videos of the storm surge flooding galveston while the eye is still > 150 miles away is a frightening thought of what could come.

please prove me wrong.

Thanks LHB that is one of the coolest links I've seen. I've got it up now. Yes make sure you mute the sound and then individually mute each channel until you pick the one you want sound for. God bless everyone who did not evacuate!

Is it just me or is there no eye to this storm??...it looks like it is just breaking up...shouldn't the eye of the storm be pretty small? This one is huge.

Status report from 78759:

Winds have reached .5 mph, sustained. Gusts up to 1.5. Beer supplies holding steady. I have decided, at this point, to just ride it out. Additional reports as it develops.

O&W, I think its time to evacuate. be careful

at 77018, clouds are really moving north to south but only an occasional strong gust at ground level.

Thanks BA.

Obviously, my post was just in jest, and I am sure you're gonna be fine where you're at. But in any event, give us updates when you can. It'll be interesting to see the posts from someone near the scene.

I am out at Memorial Dr. and Beltway 8, and just a few minutes ago I stepped outside and looked west, and the sky was lighting up with orange and green flashes. It freaked me out. Apparently the power is already out a little further west of me. No rain yet here, but a pretty stiff wind. Going to batten down the hatches and hope it doesn't get too freaky.

From 77381....wind gust to 35 mph...neighbors and I have been standing out in the street talking most of the evening. Worst is yet to come.

The eye is suppose to come right over us here in The Woodlands. I'm not sure what to expect. There should be lots of treest down by morning. Hopefully not on my house.

gecko, I forget for sure but most of the trees out there are Pine, right? They do horrible in winds like this when sustained. So if you are near trees, don't be in the parts of your house where they may fall, just in case. A couple of different sources have gone on about how devastating it could be with Pine trees being so common in East Texas. Tons of outtages.

Baton Rouge has parts still out of power from Gustav, a week or more ago. God speed, so to say.

Gusting winds here in 77084 out near Barker Cypress and Clay. Power flickers once in a while but not much else yet. Winds have picked up some since this afternoon, but no rains yet.
