I was curious to see if there is an Outback Steakhouse in Australia and there is. If someone were to travel there, why would you eat there? We have those here, it's not that great, and don't you want to go to great local places on vacation?

Same thing with going to Sbarro's in NYC. In a city known for pizza, why would you go to a place that's in every food court. I just don't understand it.

I admit I was guilty of eating at Popeye's in New Orleans. But we slept late and were in a hurry to get to the stadium to drink beer before the Tulane game.

We did make up for it by eating at Muther's that night...

Never saw an Outback Steakhouse in Australia, or a blooming onion for that matter. I did eat at a pizza hut in germany though. I never understood how Red Lobster could do business in Florida on the coast.

Popeye's red beans and rice wins contests in NOLA nearly every year.

there's a really big olive garden in times square.

this topic is probably my biggest travel pet peave.

people going to a new place yet seeking out the familiar chain to dine at. I just don't understand it.

If you go to _ San Francisco __, why would you eat at _ Joe's Crab Shack __?

The location near Fisherman's Wharf is always packed! I honestly don't understand it... Even if you want something kid-friendly, there are tons of other places right there....

I generally avoid anything on the road that I can have at home.

Some notable exceptions:

1) Italy - McD's for breakfast. Those people don't eat breakfast. Even if it is included with your hotel, it probably is next to nothing. The gelato shops are open at 7 am, but nothing for breakfast. McD's advertises an 'American Breakfast' and I eat it every chance I get when in Italy.

2) If I've been on the road for a while (3+ weeks generally), I might partake of a chain or something. Sometimes it's to get my 'american grease' withdrawal taken care of, other times, I just get tired of looking for new places to eat nd want something I know will be at least adequate.

Ohh, and I've been told (though I have not gone) that the original Sbarro's is actually very good,

I can understand where a lot of you are coming from.

I was mainly talking about going somewhere that is known for something (like the afforementioned NYC pizza example) and then going to some chain. I also don't understand going to Australia and then going to some place with an inauthentic Austrian atmosphere like Outback.

It's kind of a difficult issue. i don't think you intention was such but at times it's like saying "if that town isn't known for it why eat that cuisine there". or is it "if that town isn't the best at blank cuisine why would I eat it in said town"?
