If you didn't live in Austin, then where?

It's more about where people are at that makes them happy, for others it's about who they are with, and for some it's about how much they are making. To each their own.

When it comes to downtown areas, or those that are close in, Austin is great. Inside loop 610 in Houston is absolutely fantastic. I agree Katy, Woodlands, Sugarland, Cypress all kind of suck, but IMO, this is not true Houston. I live inside the loop and love it, and would prefer to be close to Dallas proper if I ever moved there. I am not a suburb fan at this point in my life.

No particular order:

Portland, OR
Chicago, IL
Vancouver BC
Helsinki, Finland

Own a bar and or Dive shop in:
Caribbean (Mexico, Ambergris Caye, Roatan)
South Pacific (French Polynesia, Fiji)

I want to be anywhere with a research institution of first class, and not in Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, or Arkansas (also include College Station). I can deal with just about any other place as long as I'm next to a big university.

My job is actually transferring me to Portland sometime this spring.

Though I will indeed miss Austin. I plan to come back and visit lots, especially in the winter. Preferably before cedar season hits.

Otherwise, in no particular order:

San Diego
Colorado Springs
Santa Fe
Taos
Sedona
Seattle
Vancouver
Hawaii

boulder probably. i've never been there, but this dude on the recruiting board has me convinced that it's pretty much the best place on earth.

if not there, probably lexington, ky. i've met some nice girls there.

If it weren't for the winters, I would go with Madison, WI or Denver, CO. Taking weather into account (I HATE the cold), I'd probably go with Albequerque, NM. My cousins seem to like Flagstaff, so maybe there too.

Excluding London (lived there for 9 years), NYC (current home), and Austin, it would be Barcelona.

I love this place – It’s got the beach, great nightlife and dancing, as well as culture, art and history. Good restaurants if you look beyond the main tourist stuff. I went to one of the street festivals there, that was just allsome.
Not too far from the Pyrenees for skiing also.

Surprising not to see Monterey Bay or SW Florida mentioned yet.

If you love Austin, I gotta think you would feel the same or better about Monterey Bay (Santa Cruz, Carmel, etc.). Maybe not if you hate hippies, but still...great weather, beautiful views and not far from civilization in San Jose/SF.

And if you're old and/or reclusive, I would think someplace between Clearwater and Marco Island, Fla., would be ideal.

You are all nuts....

Lago Vista Texas baby.
Beautiful Lake Travis, the Texas Hill Country, plenty of quality golf courses and fabulous sunsets. Plus I can be in Austin in 45 minutes from there.

I am not there yet but I am getting closer. I will certainly be there by the time I retire.

Definitely Hong Kong. After living in the PRC for a while, visiting Hong Kong was like being in a version of England that was full of Chinese people and general awesomeness. They are still very autonomous...keeping their own legal system currency and police. The PRC mainly runs its foreign affairs.

I only visited for a few days, but I pretty much know I'm going to live there permanently one day.
