I Phone? Yes ,, no... maybe?

trying to decide whether or not to by an I phone for my Dughter and/or perhaps wife. I think I have decided against the I Phone for my junior high daughter, and the wife is't the big technophobe so I don't know how much use it will be to her. However as my buddy said, that the beauty of the I Phone it's great for techno dummies.

For her I could definitely see the use in being able to check her private email away from home, as her laptop is secure and she can't access her personal email or most websites with it. She also could use the GPS features ocasionally, and would probably check the kids teacher's websites more often. It would probably be a great tool, but is the I phone so easy to use that a gal that is totally technically unsavvy would get enough use out of it?

Opinions?

Suggestions???

Summer:

I use it just as you descibed your wife would use it, it is very easy to use. I even use it for a couple of other things as well. For checking personal email, occasional websites, and maps it is simple and easy. Easier than any other device I have tried.

I tried to use it at the Apple store in Chicago, and I can say that the text messaging was awful. The keyboard is only available in the portrait orientation, so the keys are so close together that you can't type without a stylus. I have skinny fingers but still couldn't get a single character to enter correctly by hand.

i got one. love the phone, but ATT can go **** itself. the worst phone service ever.

but who knows might work better in you area.

If it weren't for being tied to AT$T, I'd have already jumped on board. That's the only thing I can that's wrong with it.

I've been loving mine for several months now. Most apps that you download are pretty easy to use and understand. Agree that they keyboard is tough.

I'd advise against it. I have had one for 3 months. I dropped it once, literally once. It fell a total of 2 feet. The screen shattered and Apple refuses to replace it. I can pay them another $200 for a replacement, or I can use it with a shattered screen. The screen is made of glass and shattering is apparently a big problem which Apple refuses to fix. I wish I had gotten the Blackberry I was considering.

If you realize that once you get an iPhone (or any apple products for that matter) that you have to absolutly do it their way no matter what and you're fine with that, then get it. Otherwise if you want more freedom and options then don't get it.

Love mine.

Can't provide any comparison.

My goilfriend dropped hers when one of our monsters knocked it form her hand, cracking the glass (she did not have any sort of protective covering on it, which is ill-advised). She went right out and got another.

FWIW

The Google Android is much better. Att sucks! But I'd like to hear opinions about Tmobile service in Austin....

A stylus will not even work with an iphone. it will not activate the touch sensors.

It is o.k. hough, because after about 3 days, you will type just fine on it. the predictive text/smart keyboard make it work just fine.

It's great. I've had mine for over a year now and have not had any problems. I sometimes wish I would so I could get the new 3g ones. I've dropped it several times and it didn't break BUT i have a hard protective cover on it as well as a screen film. I'm on my second cover because of the times I've dropped it. I've also never had any problems with the service. My sister in law is a service rep for ATT wireless and she gets free phones except for the iphone. After using all the other phones she paid for an iphone and loves it. She says the I-phone is better than the blackberry for the average user.

i recently gave in and bought an iPhone. I'm not an apple fanboy, and it kinda pains me to buy apple stuff but I've been happy with it so far.

I previously was using a Blackjack (gen 1).

My biggest was concern was the ability to sync with Exchange, and that we use security certificates. I found out you can just email the certs to a yahoo or gmail account, download the email via the iphone, and install them one by one. then you can set up the exchange sync settings and you're golden. It gets email and the calendar info, which was the biggest need for me. I track all my personal appointments via my outlook calendar as well, so it's really handy to put them into my calendar at work, and have them automatically download into my phone, and vice versa.

The GPS is nice, it can really help people move around because the dot on the map follows you around. I also chose the phone because it's trendy enough to where all these apps always come out. Anything that the broad public also wants can be updated via firmware updates via iTunes, which is nice

They also try to push the $45 data plan if you're a corporate user, but the $30 plan works just fine. Just don't tell them more than you need to.

I've got a rubber Incase protective cover, and I bought some of the protective films to keep the original screen, so all the oil from my fingers doesn't end up on the actual screen, but only on the film. that way, i can buy new ones every 6-12 months. (I'll say one thing tho, it's annoying to get those protective covers on, w/o having airbubbles. I managed to get mine on w/o any bubbles, except in the corner, but it's not bothering me. But i had lots of issues with my fiancee's phone. Any dust particles that get caught on the cover leaves airbubbles. ARGH!)

The keyboard might have been an issue as well, but the software autocorrects words you might have misspelled by a fat finger, so that kind of makes up for the slightly cramped keyboard.

All in all, it's pretty handy.

Let me first say I have a Treo 755. This is my second Treo in a row. and I LOVE them. I also have sprint service.

Here are the pros and cons I see as I have tried the iphone.

Pros

1)it is the best phone in the world for internet usage. PERIOD.
2)the look is ultra slick

Cons.

1)ATT. Not iphone's fault per se, but ATT SUCKS.
2)Texting. If you text a great deal it is hard to type on. I have heard this also from iphone owners I know and not just my admittedly limited experience.

those are some of the major pros and cons as I see it. I would check out the Treo, and the new Blackberry. I got started on the Treos for their features about 5 years ago. I also love that the Palm 0S as I was using a Palm PDA before that. Treos with Windows mobile.. well Windows mobile in general sux.

Yeah, I went to the Apple store and the manager was a huge dick. The dude was really offensive. He essentially called me a liar for saying I had only dropped it once (there isn't a single scratch on it anywhere else). I left and informed him that I would make sure to cost Apple more in business than it would have cost to replace my phone. I still use it and people ask about it being broken all the time. I am never going to buy another Apple product after the treatment I got there. I've got an Ipod, I'll replace it with something else when it goes.

thanks for seconding that info SAChick. I haven't known someone who changed phones because of texting, but it is a big deal.

I am a texter and don't use the internet on the phone. So for me, it is Treo all the way. Oh, and I really really use the calender programs and that is great because I already knew Palm OS.

It is the best f'n thing ever. It isn't just a phone, it is a portable internet access point, it is a little game machine, it is a beautiful thing. I've had mine for over a year. It is great. Yes, get one for everyone.

If the broken iPhone is making you so angry, why just shell out a couple of hundred dollars for a new (non iPhone) phone? If I was really angry at the iPhone and Apple, the last thing I would want to do is use their product constantly.

I'm looking to get an iPhone over the next week or two. My company is still tied to Blackberry, so I basically can get a free basic BB or pay for the iPhone myself, but then get the monthly bill paid. The only decision I have now is for the 8 or 16GB. I'm thinking about the 16GB just to be safe.

Yes, get the 16.

I'm hoping to keep using mine until the next hardware release.

I've dropped mine twice...once, it fell out of the case as I was getting out of the truck - fell about 3 ft.

The second, I was pulling it out of the case, but not really paying attention...I ended up tossing it about 6 ft...

It didn't break either time and I didn't have a hardcase on it then...

But, I got one now, since I don't want to tempt the Gods TOO much...

As for typing, it isn't any harder than my BB Curve that I had (and sold after I got my iPhone). In fact, the predictive text is better for my fat fingers...I can type about the same speed as I did on the Curve...

The innerwebz are WAY better, though...And the mail is just as good or maybe a little better...

And it really is easy to use...

Of course, if your wife is not tech savvy, you may have to do the initial setup, but then you were probably gonna have to do that with ANY phone you got her....

For, me, though, it's the innerwebz, the Google Maps app and then all the free apps that make it so damn good...
