1980, this country was in complete and utter shambles and chaos. So much so that Ted Kennedy actually ran against a sitting president to prevent him from winning re-election.

Yea, sorry but having lived through both era's, 1980 was twice as bad, until election day.
 
Reagan and Obama inherited similar situations regarding the economy. Their responses to the situations were very different, however. Reagan cut taxes, cut some spending (with the significant exception of the military, for which he increased spending to drive the USSR to bankruptcy), and reduced regulations. Obama has tried to increase taxes and created the expectation that they will increase, dramatically increased government spending, and increased the regulatory burden. Reagan cut tax rates and cut exemptions. Obama wants to increase tax rates.

Reagan's policies led to a dramatic recovery; Obama's have led to a feeble recovery at best. The distinction is clear.
 
Checked and unemployment was 7.2% and falling in Nov. 1984. Reagan inherited a worse situation than Obama did (based on the unemployment rates) and did a better job of fixing it than Obama has.

I think the big difference is Reagan believed in the free market and was a capitalist. He was small business friendly which encouraged the private sector to grow. Obama is not small business friendly and has the owners holding back due to Obama's socialist attitude and will not hire. If you will look, there is always a bump up in unemployment after the christmas spending

But every single year the unemployment drops back down after Jan to Feb. The exception being Obama's first year. I'm not going to sit here and say that Bush handed off Obama in good condition, but never in any month did Bush have the unemployment sky rocket while being the President which tells me that if left alone we would have recovered like every single time. Under Bush he never had over a 6.5% which it happened 3 times under Bush and it rebounded the first two times. The third time Obama took over. Dec 2008 his predecessor was named (which it jumped to 7.1) Talk about fear of the private sector.

What's sad is Obama had the aid of almost a trillion dollars to pay people to go back to work and unemployment got worse. Although the numbers show recent improvement, it's not. If Obama asked for more stimilus money to extend unempolyment, iyou would see all the people that have no jobs and ran out of unemployment benefits come back to the unemployment office to reapply.
 
Under Reagan, Cap Weinberger conspired with the Saudis to sell oil cheap for < $10 @ barrel which bankrupted the USSR.

It also put 650,000 Americans out of business in the energy industry who were good little rubberstamp Republicans. I know this because I was one of them.
 
i wonder if some of you have ever considered that Obama basically took every major bush spending policy that really started this thing into a deep spiral, and put it on steroids. Obama is dumb enough to campaign against the bush spending policies, and then went out and made them worse. Waht kind of dumbass does that? What kind of dumbass obama taint licker continues to support it? good grief people. the man is a moron and a menace.
