I feel for Staff Sgt. Robert Bales

Most of the convicted on death row have tragic back stories: abuse, neglect, abject poverty etc.

I don't feel sorry for them, and I don't feel sorry for Bale. People are accountable for their actions. He murdered innocent people. I cannot imagine the pain, sorrow, anguish, terror, and sadness that his victims and their familes have gone through, anymore than I can imagine it for American families killed by serial murderers.

Regardless of how ****** he had it, he didn't elect to put a gun to his own head or go AWOL and face the consequences -- he ended the lives of 16 people. Further, as a consequence, Americans soliders will likely die. More Afghans may also die if the violence in the wake of this tragedy escalates.

What Bales did was a form of a suicide. He knew there would be a punishment- he just didn't think this through. And while BI is correct that the circumstances that led him to destroy his life were because of other people, ultimately I put the responsibility on Bales.

Bales got to this level of crazyness while others in a similar position were able to keep it together.

If he had to destroy a life, put a bullet in your own head. What he did killed 16 Afghans PLUS numerous other Americans and Afghans who will die as a result of the Al Qaeda activities related to this. It was a dumb and selfish way to lose control of his life.

There is a lot of blame here, and yes, some of it goes to the generals and ultimate supporters of the war, but the vast majority goes to Bales.

I don't have any sympathy for Bales. The great respect we all had for his service to the country was lost with this one act.

BI - Create a new thread to talk about PNAC. I've always been amazed that never got more coverage. This was a group of men publically stating their desire to "project American power" because we had lost our leadership in the world long before returning to power. It is a man behind the curtains moment in a study of powerful agendas. Sadly, nobody used the tragic disaster of 9/11 more to suit an agenda more than that cabal.
