How to destroy your rep as a movie critic:

Who the **** cares what movie critics think? I don't see movies based on professional reviews and haven't for years. Critics of any kind, whether it be film, food, drink or music, are often full of ****. So, tune them out.

Like what you like. Stop caring what others think.

I agree that Die Hard is one of the best action flicks. It is also wildly improbable and appeals to the macho fantasies of a lot of people. It is pure escapism, which is one of the reasons we go to films.

Titanic appealed to the fantasies of a lot of teenage girls and they went to see it multiple times so it made a fortune. The reason it won so many oscars is because it was a masterpiece from the standpoint of technical proficiency.

I would compare it to Casablanca in terms of the romance of its core story. Man gives it all up for the woman he loves----and she still burns a light in the window for him 70 years later, etc.

I apologize for calling you guys knuckledraggers but I get frustrated by people who think that because they like something that everybody should. Most people who are into films enough to become critics have to see a lot of films they don't like. The honest ones will say so and tell you why.

I think Ebert is the best critic, because he approaches each movie from the aspect of what it is trying to do- if a movie wants to be mindless action thrills, then how thrilling was it? If a movie wants to be chick-flick pablum, how well did it lay on the syrup, and did it avoid applying it too thick? He has given great reviews to movies as varied as Reanimator and The English Patient, because they each served their target audiences well.

Chris Kelly of the FW-ST is a horrible critic, because he approaches the film from the aspect of how well it met his expectations. He panned the Rock's remake of Walking Tall, not because it was crap, but because he feared it would encourage young males to vote Republican. That's what we have to deal with in Tarrant County.
