How to destroy your rep as a movie critic:

Son of a Son

Regardless of whether his other opinions are any good, anyone who says they didn't like the original Die Hard has no business offering his opinion on movies.

Have you knuckledraggers ever noticed that the people who churn out the entertainment for us don't have any respect for this kind of film except for the fact that it provides work for people? THese films cater to the lowest common denominators among the movie public: sadistic violence, glorification of stick figure heroes, etc.

That is why the pros hand out Oscars to films that the retarded portion of the public never goes to see. They know the difference between quality and junk.

So do an awful lot of the critics, in spite of the fact that they have to review junk like the Rambo movies

DeadHead - Wouldn't the combined awesomeness of VY and the wolf shirt cause us all to spontaneously combust? You really have to think these things through.

Thanks for the reinforcements.

If the studios were interested in controlling the Oscars they would get more popular films nominated. Instead, most years only one popular film gets nominated and the winner is one that the pros like. Good example, Saving Private Ryan got beat by Shakespeare in Love. There are thousands of others.

The original Rockie movie was not bad at all. The rest have been mindless, self regarding junk.

The critic quoted was complimentary about the first Die Hard film and particularly about Bruce Willis. He just said he didn't like it.

I personally like a lot of junk, that doesn't mean it is any good. Likewise, there is some stuff that is of high quality that I don't care much for.

The original poster and several follow ups have dumped on this critic because he did not like one movie they liked or several in a genre they liked. To me a knuckledragger is somebody who can't tell the difference between quality and junk and thinks that if he likes something it is good. Movies of the Airplane genre are junk but I like them anyway. Atonement was very well made and acted, etc, but left me cold.

I don't think any critic destroys his credibility by panning a film I don't enjoy.

The first Die Hard was probably one of the best action movies ever made. It seems derivative now because every single movie afterwards copied it. The rest of the Die Hards sucked.

Robert McKee has a section On Die Hard in Story

I remember a critic for the Ft Worth Star Telegram listing Unbreakable as his favorite movie of 2000 and Loser being in the top 10. Snatch was in the bottom 10. I really hope that guy still doesnt have a job

First of all, I don't think this guy has even seen half the movies he is commenting on in this article. For instance, he said The Road Warrior was "toned down to make it less violent (than the first Max Max)." Uh, hello McFly? Were you in the bathroom during roughly 95% of this movie?

Anyway, he also ripped these movies:

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Mad Max series
Predator
First Blood
Return of the Jedi
Rocky III, IV, and VI
Die Hard With a Vengeance
Alien and Aliens (implied that Alien 3 was better. wtf?)

So basically this guy is a no talent assclown whose opinion about movies I give slightly less credence to than my dog's.

I know one of Siskel or Ebert gave DH a thumb down. Not sure which.

I remember him harping on the idiocy of the LAPD. It was 1988, so OJ and RK hadn't happened. I can give him a pass on that criticism. If DH was released in 1995 he may have gone the other way on it.

what I said was that the rolling stones have been repeating themselves ever since Satanic Majesties. That was in 1968, so it was 40 years of irrelevant repetitive music.

But if you like to hear 65 year old guys repeat themselves, have at it.............you will feel right at home in the retirement community.

Some critic doesn't like a number of popular action movies? Oh the ******* humanity. Next, maybe y'all can and go boycott some book critic for not liking 'The Da Vinci Code.'

just watched the original die hard on hbo. I had seen 2 and 3, but never the original. it was quite good although we didn't really need the Carl Winslow sappy storyline...

The respectability of the Oscars has been in the tank ever since Nicolas Cage won. Its like Mark Farris winning the Heisman.
