How did that just happen (Phelps)

You know Spitz only won 4 "by himself" right? You seem to have left that part out of your argument there.

Also Spitz barely won the 100m, so I see no reason to believe he would have definitely won the 50, it's a different kinda race.

People love to just spit stuff out without doing any research on it. They also love anything that happened years ago more than stuff happening right now for some reason

EDIT:
Here's the results from '72:
The Link

As you see he was in the 100 and 200, and he was a lot faster than the field in the 200 than the 100. Thus I doubt he would have swam in the 50 just as Phelps doesn't swim the 50.

I don't know if he's the greatest Olympian ever, but he's certainly the greatest swimmer. It's hard to compare a sport like swimming with Tennis where there are fewer events and medals to go around. It'd be cool if we ever get to see a true multi-dimensional athlete. Someone that can win gold in the pool, on the track, and contribute to a team sport.

I was not comparing Phelps and Spitz. I was merely pointing out that Phelps won his individual medals, and was on a winning team for others. It's great that he did what he did, but it's not worth all the hype.

I'm all behind our swimmers, but they are essentially one-trick ponies compared to a Trey Hardee.
