How did that just happen (Phelps)

Michael Phelps is a phenom.

better to be be lucky sometimes. Cavic had that won if he doesnt try to just coast in. Phelps caught a huge break. i'm sure he even knows that cavic swam the better race.

Wow. Cavic gave that away. He did have Phelps beat. On the replay he doesnt follow with another stroke. If he goes through another stroke, as Phelps does, the gold is his. Phelps won because he gave one last final stroke. That one stroke propelled him slightly passed the gliding Cavic. Wow.

Theres no Leinart here. Crocker on the other hand just doesnt seem to have the umph that he did 3 years ago. What can you say. I recall in Athens the same thing happened. Crocker coasted the last second and that allowed Phelps to pass him on the last stroke too.

just callin' it like i see it. i think phelps is incredible but cavic lost the race more than phelps won it imo. i'm glad phelps won it though. it was incredible.

Cavic didnt finish. When he sees the replay he is gonna be kicking himself because he had that race won.

I really don't care what Phelps did, so much as I am pissed that Crocker missed the stand by .01

looks like Cavic misjudged the wall by an inch. He lost it. Phelps put himself in the position to benefit from Cavic's screwup. And that's not taking anything from Phelps.

Not sure I agree that Cavic blew it. Looking at it again I think if Cavic takes another stroke he loses by more than 0.01. I think he was just at the wrong place in his stroke.

I hear now that Serbia is filing a protest...

They both got caught between strokes--probably because they were so amped up and going faster than they ever had--and each had to choose a less than perfect finish technique. Neither of them screwed up or got lucky. Phelps just touched first. Simple as that.

sl horn is exactly right. if you watch the last few strokes, youll notice that phelps cycle starts and ends just before cavics. if cavic pulls his arms back to start another cycle, he loses ground and phelps beats him just the same. his best chance was probably to try that reach, rather than to power into the wall like phelps, only moments later.

the fly is a lurching stroke, with the swimmers speed in the water changing depending on the point in their stroke. by continuing to swim rather than to reach for the wall, phelps took full advantage of that lurch.

you can call him lucky, but he did the same thing to crocker in 04. maybe he got lucky there too, but at some point, you have to recognize the results for what they show. phelps goes end to end faster than anyone else, and thats how they decide who wins.

I have read from swimmers that the last 25 or 50 you don't take a breath, and the guy that came in second to Phelps (curly hair, cute, good friend, can't think of his name) said he has literally been passing out, going to black as he touches the wall. I wonder if this guy misjudged due to something like this-I noticed in the 100 sprint no one important took one breath---that blows my mind. Go Phelps!! It is meant to be...

Phelps had the better race. I am not sure how anyone can say differently. If the other guy takes that stroke or half stroke he finishes 2nd anyway, so he tried the lunge and Phelps just had too much power. It was an amazing race and if I were Spitz, THAT would be how I wanted to see my record tied. AMAZING!!

I am upset Ian finished 4th. I thought for sure he had the bronze but it was not to be.

Phelps has a much better 2nd leg. He made the turn I think 7th. Cavic still had the lead at 75m but Phelps had closed in and shortly after it was dead even. Then Cavic got about a half stroke ahead of him but Phelps closed that the last 5 strokes and just outtouched him. Amazing comeback. I'll just leave it at that.

Agree with the couple assessments that say both got caught in mid-stroke and either way Cavic loses.

Can't believe some people "don't give a damn about Phelps" because Crocker is racing. Not only is Phelps an American but he is also trying to do something that has never been done and win 8 golds....Not just 7 to tie Spitz. Spitz record was hard enough but if Phelps takes 8 I think it's virtually impossible for anyone from another country (maybe Australia) to ever match that and certainly not beat it. The only way to even get that many golds would mean you have to have exceptional teams on the relays as well and the USA and the previously mentioned Australians are the ones that consistently dominate those events.

I won't speak for anyone but myself.

I was rooting hard for Crocker, and I was upset that he didn't get a medal...

Was I unhappy because Phelps won? NO.

What I was saying is that my JOY that Phelps won was overshadowed by my disappointment with how Crocker did.

I don't think I am less of an American because I rooted for ONE American over another... I rooted for the HORN... I am fine with Phelps winning.

GO PHELPS! GO USA! But... also GO HORNS!

Of course I wanted to see Crocker win/beat Phelps. Phelps is an American, so Im not complaining. That said, I dont agree that if Cavic had taken another stroke he would have still lost. Then again, maybe I need to watch it yet again. To me Cavic lost it because he coasted the final meter, just as Crocker did in Athens.

Phelps finishes. Thats why he wins. However, the 100 fly is the only sprint event that he has ever won on the world level. As was noted earlier, Phelps was way back and didnt get to a point where he could win until about the 75th meter.

Phelps does his damage the most in the 200 meter events. Hes fast enough to be considered for relays, but hes not a true sprinter. That said, again, no one has done what he has before, so you have to give him credit!

Go Crocker

Way to go for Piersol and Hansen on the 4x100 relay last night. However, if you watched the raising of the US flag during the medal cerimony you would have thought that Phelps won that race all by himself. They intentionally avoided showing any of the other guys and had the camera fixed on Phelps the whole time. It was a relay, not an individual event.

well if you watched the NBC interview of the relay team after the event, the reporter tried to focus on the other guys, but the other guys would only talk about Phelps.

Michael Phelps won 5 gold medals; the teams he was on won three. He gets 8 medals (and I know, Spitz did not win 7 by himself either), but he won 5.

To say as ABC did this a.m. that he's the greates Olympic athlete in history is stretching it a bit, IMHO.
