How did Mr. Miagi get his cash?

Miyagi built up his vast personal fortune through an array of ventures: video game arcades, laundry, cigarette machines, trucking, and dabbling a bit in personal loans and politics.

Miyagi was set to retire, his dojo empire stretching from the beaches of California to the suburbs of Illinois, when his handpicked successor went AWOL. Unable to take Miyagi's "wax-on, wax-off" methods this argyle assassin went on a rampage across middle America, destroying various automobiles in the process:

I think that the previous poster was right when he said that he made a fortune when he sold Arnolds Drive-In in Milwaulkee, then moved out west.

He was a highly paid assasin, grew tired of killing and devoted his time and efforts to peaceful things like bonzi trees and rubbing the legs of teenagers

I am pretty sure that he was offered and accepted a scholarship to play at Oklahoma. That is how he got his money. What is odd is that he did not even have to do any work. He was often seen getting out of a nice new car with a new coat on.

Maybe he went in with Forrest Gump and bought shares of Apple Computer during their IPO?

Seriously, I remember reading an article a while back about some lady who lived in the projects for most of her life, and had worked for many years as a janitor at an inner city school. When she passed away, everyone was shocked to learn she had left an estate worth well over $1 million. She had lived humbly and stayed within her means for most of her life. With proper financial planning, it is a doable goal for even someone with a modest income.

This was several years ago, so my memory of the details may be a bit off. But Miyagi seems like a humble, hard-working guy, so it is possible that, just like the lady, he amassed quite a bit of dough for himself over the years through frugal living, and then decided to enjoy it some during his golden years. After all, he didn't have any kids around to spend his money. I suspect he just did the maintenance man gig as a way to keep busy, and make a little on the side. Kinda like the elderly people who work as greeters at Wal-Mart.

It's been a while since I saw the movie -- did he ever learn to drive? If so, perhaps the DMV made him stop due to his age or a health condition. Maybe he got drunk mourning the loss of his family one time, and drove when he shouldn't. Dunno, I'm just reaching.

Come on, guys. Haven't we all figured how everyone in California made their money by now???

1. Buy a nice big house by inflating your income to your lender.
2. Ignore the fact that your home cost 100x your annual salary.
3. Make tiny monthly payments for next 12 months since you were smart enough to get a 1-year, pay-option ARM with a teaser rate of 2% and negative amortization.
4. On the first anniversary of your purchase, get a home equity loan and cash out $100,000 tax free, plus a little extra to cover your next 12 mortgage payments.
5. Repeat step 4 each and every year thereafter.

At the beginning of KK1, he bet $10,000 against Cobra Kai in the "All Valley Karate Tournament" at 10,000-1 odds. Then trained Daniel-son into a killing machine. He knew his pay day was coming so he lived off credit and check kiting until the end of KK1.
