2003,
Have you ever seen a Stanford grad, fan, or student wearing a "Directors Cup" cap or shirt? They don't even sell them at the Track Shack in Palo Alto.
"Diminish"? Not at all. It was an award created by Sears to honor economically destressed and under performing programs to help get their "too cool to care crowd" to open their checkbooks.
I don't know many Stanford grads (for better or worse I'm not sure) but because of the old rules Stanford won this every year because not only do they have a very solid athletic program, but they also have twice as many varsity sports as anyone else.
Texas prides itself on its athletics program. We do care that our ladies won the tennis title and the crew title, right? Our men won the swimming title. Almost won the volleyball title. Baseball has a real shot in Omaha.
I may be different than yall, but I'm thrilled if Texas gets a trophy for having the best athletics program this year. We should have won it at least twice more in the 2000s.
It elevates the entire program. Sure, individual sports titles are nice, but being honored for being the best overall athletics program is most welcome.
