How Bad do you Want Ewers?

If winning is now largely about money then we stand a better chance of a return to winning ways - nothing to be done about it so let's leverage our advantages

I'm not sure I would choose a system that would require us to outbid Aggie jock sniffers. Obsession has limits ..except in the SEC.

Here are my points on Ewers...
  • He was a Horn and wanted to be a Horn until Tom's wheels fell off.
  • $1,4M is enough money to skip your senior year for
  • He hasn't uttered one puffed up word as far as I can find
  • He tweets about hard work and bible verses, requests to pray for friends' sick loved ones, inspirational stories
  • He's decided to transfer out of Tosu
Maybe he's self important, but we don't know, and shouldn't apply too much more than those things...or any other things that seem to be true about a young man until we know.

Now how can anyone love a trip to Lubbock? Do they like wind, dust bowls and a mouth full of dirt?

For starters, there's quite a few metroplex girls going to college there and Dallas, in particular, is famous for it's gorgeous women.

Back in 1983/84 I had a long distance relationship (I lived in Dallas) with a girl going to Tech. We met over the summer as she was an intern. Yeah... I swooped in on the college intern. Relax. I was only 24 at the time. But I digress. So, I visited her over the two year stretch and always had a great time. The students partied A LOT. That's what mattered. They had a good time and you get caught up in it right away. After a while, you don't even realize you're in Lubbock except for the fact that it was a dry county. So the trek to the liquor store was a bit of a pain but guess what? That was a party too. It's all a party, right?

The other charm of Lubbock was the time me and this other guy (who was also dating a Red Raider long distance) ran out of gas about five miles out of Lubbock. Long story short. He thumbed a ride and I stayed with the car. He got picked up almost immediately and I had at least five - seven people stop and ask me if I needed assistance. That alone put Lubbock on the map in my mind and I've never forgotten it.

There was/is none of the Austin snootiness up there. It's a real thing and some folks just like that.

I did.

Sark wants a long line trying to get into UT. That's what he needs. Now is the time.

That may be a better reason than any to want him here. Would be nice to have a final push to bring that quintet of o-linemen and a couple more receivers into the class. If he accomplished nothing other than closing the deal on 4-5 key recruits, it'd be worth a scholarship if he never played a down.

No doubt that the folks in west (OK, NW) Texas are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I might put Amarillo at the top of that list.

Another selling point:

“Assuming you win the job, how would you like to be the starting quarterback next September when Alabama comes to town?”

If this kid is as confident or perhaps cocky as I think he is, he would absolutely relish that opportunity on a big stage. National attention. Immediate validation.

What's college football going to look like in 10-15 years?

Don't like this idea - without boundaries, where does this go?

Did Ewers have to pay back the NIL $ in the OSU deal? if not, great lesson in accountability.

I can see this whole thing going off the rails in a bad way for college football.

I could be wrong but I think Ewers gets a bad rap. He saw Herman’s players recruiting against him and the other on/off field drama, so de-commited. I can’t really blame him. What happened at OSU, I have no idea?

It wasn't OSU paying him NIL money but a Sports Marketing Agency who likely had designs on locking him down into his NFL career. I'm sure he considered the impact to that deal before announcing his transfer intentions.

What happened at OSU? He's sitting behind Heisman finalist CJ Stroud who is only a Freshman. At a minimum Ewers is waiting a year, maybe two before getting a chance to compete for the starting position.

Legal on the table or illegal under the table? Which is it?

If we always held true to our stated values, we have always avoided the SEC due to the graft, corruption and "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin" ethic. Now the playing field is level and we can proudly compete with our wallets; the same as the SEC has always done it.

Am I wrong?
Not wrong at all.

I'm less than thrilled with the ever broadening commercialization of college sports, but I also realize that to be a ship that sailed a long time ago.

I do like the idea that, if directly funding athletes is now a perfectly legit thing for everybody, Texas should be able to out-compete just about everybody else on a level playing field of cash.

What's the future gonna' look like?

CONTRACTS.

Just like the pros. It will go beyond scholarships and transfer rules. You will sign with the school and be bound to it just like the pros are to their team. The only main difference is that the colleges won't be able to trade the players UNLESS all players agree (which seems a bit absurd).

The good news about the contracts is that the players might stay longer and we would possibly return to the days of loyalty (bought and paid for of course) because the players will stay longer and not bail at the slightest hint of a problem.

Possibly. Just a thought.

How was the Raider Rash? i kid

College Football is selling its soul. I dont think it is going to be a pretty sight. No schoolies, just draft choices free agency. We will see more of the nonsense we saw in college and pro sports in the last few years.I would say more but would be west malled. None of us can bad mouth Switzer anymore.

Longhorn Dave going into the Football Forums Transfer Portal, unless I can get a new Hornfans mouse pad and the ability to block any post with "Bomar" in it.

Nor do I. Might have been his fit in the tOSU offense strategy was not what the coaches wanted. Maybe he thought he should be the starter on day one through the season which didn't happen. Who knows? If he's everything we've been told he is or believe he is, then he may be our QB from day one. But, he ain't signed up yet.
