Houston Astros 2019 thread............

This is what our rotation looks like now:

1. Cole
2. Verlander
3. Greinke
4. Opener/Urquidy)
5. Cole
6. Verlander
7. Greinke

The downside is that Cole won’t be available for use at all most likely in Game 7 with just 2 days rest. Upside is having him pitch twice early on.

Or, to look at it another way - a great week ahead for sports --

Today: NFL
Mon: MNF
Tues: NBA starts + ASTROS IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN! - Game 1
Wed: ASTROS IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN! - Game 2
Thurs: NFL
Fri: ASTROS IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN! - Game 3
Sat: CFB (TEXAS V. TCU) + ASTROS IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN!
Sun: NFL + ASTROS IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN! - Game 5

Still cannot get the image out of my mind, complete with the Chris Farley voice...

"Little guy with a big stick....little guy with a big stick"

(you know, as opposed to fat guy in a little coat)

Would have liked to see Straw in there...he has some wheels and, in what I expect to be a low-scoring series, that late inning replacement speed on the bases would be nice.

I am not sure where I would have priced it but I suspect some of these are baking in the funds that had to be laid off to address all of the Mattress Mack bets.

Washington is NOT as bad as the prices would otherwise have suggested. The Astros are going to have a dogfight on their hands with the Nationals.

I would have been a lot more comfortable with the Astros around a -185 to -195. Nationals ought to be somewhere around a +150 to +170 when viewed as a Series price.

I think Greinke's total WAR combined (both teams) is also over 5

No way. Cole isn't "due" a clunker. Tonight we can still win but the bats have to come alive. After the first inning Verlander shut them down.
Care to re-evaluate the claim about not being 'due' for a clunker?

The simple reality, which even a multi-decade fan of the Astros HAS to acknowledge is a regression to the mean is going to occur for ANYONE on that sort of an epic streak. We have been seeing the same thing with Alvarez at the plate.

Cole was not sharp against the Yankees but scraped through. He scratched and clawed last night as well, but it was clear that he was not 'on' since, after all, when was the last time you saw him give up tape measure shots in a game?

No I do not care to reevaluate my position. High performing athletes or performers expect to perform at a high level night in and night out. There is not a single high level performer that thinks to themselves they have had a nice run so they are bound to suck the next time out. That doesn't mean that you are going to throw no hitters every single game but you cannot have the mentality that you have won 15 games in a row so your next game is probably going to suck. So no, Cole was not "due" a clunker as far as this discussion goes. Now he obviously did not have his best game and the offense was not able to provide enough run support. But he was not "due" a clunker.

It isn't about whether a particular athlete believes they are or are not due for a regression to the mean. It IS about reality. And anyone that believed he was not going to have such an outing somewhere along the line is more delusional than the left-coast denizens of the forums...

When you win 19 in a row and strike out double-digits for double-digit games, reality says that won't continue ad infinitum. That means a clunker is going to exist. Better that it came in a Game 1 as opposed to a Game Final...

Its still about the mentality. And clunker is certainly a relative term. The offense has to do better. I dont expect Verlander to throw 7 shutout innings. He will need some runs.
