Horns' football practice video features Chiles

captain murphy,

You're right, many were hating on him for no reason. There was NO reason to call him selfish. Especially after I talked to a certain senior WR. I wonder how many will admit they were actually trying to be selfish with the life of another, for there own selfish reasons.

Allow me throw in my two cents. I think Colt can be an productive player if he can stay in the pocket and complete passes down field WITHOUT turning the ball over. If he hadn't have gotten hurt his freshman year we would have cleaned up.

However his sophomore year was rocky and there were many times where I thought he should possibly be benched, but there wasn't a great replacement, Chiles had trouble in the passing game, and Harris "wasn't up to speed". But if it is indeed true that CHiles is throwing the ball well! All problems will be solved. Because as Vince proved his sophomore year (12-11 td-int ratio and 11-1 record) you don't have to be a GREAT passer to win games. I think it's healthy to have competition and the ability to be "multiple in what you do" CHiles is a change of pace guy and I feel like he could help us win even more games if he is a passing threat.

What little I know about Mack Brown and Greg Davis tells me that, barring a complete meltdown or serious injury, there is no doubt about who will be the starting qb come fall. Any suggestion to the contrary is generated by watching too much college basketball.

Come on J Chiles

. I'd love to see him take the starting JOB, Hes bigger, faster, more athletic then Colt. It can happen. If Colt continues to struggle, it will happen. Bet some of fellas were Chance Mock supporters as well.

The only reason I'm leaving this thread open is for the highlight link and the comments about it. I think it's time we called a halt to the camps we have developing and the accusations that are starting to go back and forth. Keep the discussions limited to what's going on on the field, no more questioning players' motives, no more twisting and misinterpreting people's statements and no more talking about other posters wasting their time.

I think a lot of people might be surprised by what happens at the QB position over the next couple of years. I get the argument about the LBs and the implication that Mack will favor seniority over talent. By the way, I am NOT saying that Chiles is more talented than McCoy.

But it wasn't that long ago that Mack started junior Chris Simms over senior Major Applewhite, because Simms' upside was greater than Applewhite's. And it wasn't that long ago that Mack started freshman Vince Young over senior Chance Mock. I realize these are imperfect analogies. I'm not saying John Chiles is Chris Simms, I'm not saying he is Vince Young. What I'm saying is he has more upside potential than Colt McCoy. If John Chiles could pass as well and read defenses as well as Colt McCoy, who in their right mind would not want John Chiles to be the starting QB?

If, if, if. It is true, my post is purely hypothetical. But since I'm a Longhorn fan, and I want my team to win as many games and championships as possible, I am heartened by reports that John Chiles seems to be throwing the ball well at spring practice. As TaylorTRoom has noted, Pat White is not known for having a great arm. When you have great feet, you don't have to have a great arm, just a serviceable arm.

We will find out this fall. We will also get a taste in the scrimmage.

The point is Colt is the QB, and its going to be hard for anyone including JC to play as long as Colt plays well. Only poor play by Colt can dethrone him as the starter.

BTW if we are starting camps I'm going to start my own "Richard Walton for QB" camp.

didn't see that coming did you?

I don't think people should be hard on Chiles just because someone else may think he can challenge McCoy. I don't get that.

I think the discrepancy between Colt's performance freshman and sophomore year doesn't come so much from him, but a lot more from the O-line in front of him. His freshman year he was playing behind a very senior group, generally the same one that played in the National Championship.

His sophomore year, after all the injuries were said and done he was playing behind a very young group. I don't think there are many drop back quarterbacks at the college level who can make good decisions while running for their lives. I'm really excited to see how he does with protection from a much better group of lineman this year.

I agree with the fact that a better line will in no doubt make Colt's numbers look a lot better, but I also feel that there were too many mistakes made by Colt when pressured to give him a free pass because of the line. Just his decision making had me calling for Chiles to get a shot more than once last year. He had a Colt 45 gunslinger mentality at times but he's only packing a 38.

I can't disagree that JC would have been a better fit for some offensive situations last year. Specifically, having a qb who can run greatly takes the pressure off of the O line, because the defense is much more hesitant to pass rush. This would have opened the pocket up a bit, and maybe JC would have completed more than 1-8 passes.

Given time in the pocket, Colt is far and away the best option because he can provide a punishing air attack through his accuracy. If the O line can't hold a pocket, we need someone like JC who can get first downs on the ground.

you could just as easily say, "Ask Ramonce Taylor."

College kids can get sidetracked by any number of things.

I hope this kid gets his chance to shine. More importantly, I hope this kid ( or any other) leads us to the promised land again. The main thing that worries me is that he will only have one year to do it. Tee Martin did it, but that was an anomaly. I still think he would be better off looking at other positions. The reality (and history) of this coaching staff tells me that he would be better of at RB or WR. I shudder to think that his only real chance of real game experience is after a major injury to Colt. The kid is a gamebreaker, just waiting for a position and a chance.

But thats just me. Posters on here get irritated with you, kchorn. I like your posts. They are at least all football related, and theres something to be said for that in the offseason. Keep it up.

Thanks, Thunderhoof - appreciate your observations.

It's a reasonably good sign that the point may be valid when the Sooner posters (e.g., Since73) are praying that John Chiles gets moved to another playing position -- like WR -- where he will seldom touch the football for the Horns.

The Sooners advised us repeatedly to move Vince to WR.

Hook 'em.

PFD, ProdigaHorn,

If you guys read real slow, you will see that Texas jack said "post like these are the reasons PEOLPE are so hard on Chiles". And he was replying to a post that said something about Chiles challenging McCoy. So I replied to his post. Maybe it went over your heads or something, or maybe you were offended that I replied to that crazy statement. Either way, slow down.

On another note...If these reports are true (chiles outperforming mccoy) i wonder if we will begin to see a QB controversy? Or, will Mack treat this situation the same way he did with the linebacking core last year?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments like that are the reason why so many ppl are hard on Chiles.

IMO

Wishy washy thinking... how do you go from 1-9 career completion % to the Starting QB for the Unviersity of Texas?

So here you go ProdigaHorn, PFD, that was a Texas jack post. This is why I replied, "I don't think you should be hard on Chiles because people think he will challenge McCoy". So yeah, I replied to a direct comment. Hope this helps you fellas feel better about my post.

since73,

"I actually hope that Chiles starts this year at QB & remains there for the entire duration of his college career."

I see what you said on a sooner board, in reference to Harris leaving, "This really puts a damper on Texas for the next 2 years because Sherrod is the only guy on campus right now that can pass the pigskin forward w/out hitting his receiver in the butt." What other Texas QB did ou fans say that about, that was known more for his great athletic ability?

"If Colt happens to get dinged which he has a history of doing then Texas's wheels will fall off much like they did 2 years ago & probably have to count on a bad defense to win the game due to the offense minus Colt having 0 playmakers if he's hurt.
Not good for Texas. Not good at all.
Not that it would have made any difference to us anyways."

This isn't two years ago. Chiles has improved, and ou hasn't done well with running QB's. As far as our defense being bad, don't count on that. And Chiles would be a playmaker, and he wouldn't be alone in that department fella.
