Horns' football practice video features Chiles

There are some interesting reports circulating in reference to the role John Chiles played in the Horns' Saturday (March 22) Spring football practice session.

Supposedly, Chiles was impressive with both his passing and running ... and, at least at this juncture, he appeared to be the featured backup QB (with little activity involving the other two backup QB candidates) to Colt McCoy. On Mack's website, there is a current video of the March 22 scrimmage highlights -- including a long touchdown pass from Chiles to blue-chip WR Malcolm Williams, and a long touchdown run by Chiles.

The touchdown pass from John Chiles to Malcolm Williams is interesting to watch on the video, because theoretically (according to the Chiles critics) the play is an impossibility. As you know, Chiles is not supposed to be able to pass the football effectively.

So, if you watch the video (on Mack's website), maybe close your eyes when you get to the 1:07 part of the tape and open them after the TD pass from Chiles to Williams, so (if you wish) you can go on believing that John Chiles cannot do what he appears to do on the play.

Some folks also may wish to skip the Chiles TD run at the end of the video, because the combination of Chiles' passing plays and his touchdown run on the video could leave the impression that he is a legitimate dual-threat quarterback candidate for the Horns.

It will be interesting to see what happens this Fall.

FWIW, Mack spoke at the UT Golf Club last week and said Chiles was definitely the backup. Actually, Harris and Kinne are competing for the 3rd string job right now.

I think people have said that to date he has not shown an ability to make the reads and then make the passes. If that has changed in months of practice and hard work then that is awesome!!! Awesome for him, the team and the fans. And I think everybody will be happy. I would assume most fans want all players to do well.

He was here in the spring last year and was the backup in 07 so I had thought he was the #2 anyways. Good to hear though that this is becoming more of a known fact so that he can get the # of reps he needs to develop. We also have to remember that both Colt and Vince redshirted. Vince was inconsistent passing as a true frosh and didn't really develop until the latter part of his sophomore season. Chiles is a true soph this season and I would expect him to be slightly ahead of where Vince was in his RS Freshman season. Most people need to be patient with his development and I think they will be suprised with what he does.

We also are very lucky to have Colt there playing so well that will allow Chiles to develop at his own pace. I am hoping they do rotate in the 2 QB's more regularly this season...perhaps a 70:30 ratio. The change of pace he brings and the different packages that can be run will really overwhelm opposing defenses at times. He was getting something like 5-6 yards a carry last seasaon and that was really with no threat to pass, an inconsistent battered offensive line, and 1 less year under his belt. Sky is the limit.

Back to that deep pass to Williams....what's up with Palmer getting burned like that. He was 2 steps behind.

Cosby's 1 hand catch was amazing. What a special player. He is the guy that can stretch the field...if our QB's can throw that far on a more regular basis.

Or Palmer did what every defense the Horns play does, get ready to stop the run when Chiles comes in. Seems like a great opportunity to shock some defenses if his passing is as good as the highlights show.

Michael Knight - actually, the point here is the opposite of what you have suggested.

The Chiles critics often have argued that the reason his playing time in intercollegiate competition should be limited is because he has "not looked good in practice" throwing the football.

So, if he now meets that standard (of throwing the football effectively in practice)... are you suggesting that we set aside what would then become the former standard (and devise a new rationalization for keeping John Chiles from seeing the football field for the Horns)?

kc, in your initial post I read that you feel people don't want him to succeed at the qb position and haha, he is doing better now. That IS the point. He may be finally getting it. But when people made those comments, he was not getting it, he was not producing where he would need to be to earn a starting or backup role. I don't care who earns that backup role, to be honest.

I just hope they earn it, and produce when/if they are called upon. I also hope they are constantly pushed and that the margin between starter, backup and other backups is minute. This is the best win/win situation for all.

I cannot recall anybody ever saying they want JC to fail or not earn the backup or even starting role. Maybe some jerk did at some point but it would not represent what I have read about the topic.

100p and MK - appreciate the observations from each of you.

Perhaps John Chiles was not exactly faltering in practice as much as some folks thought. He threw the football effectively in Class 5A HS competition in the Metroplex, but seldom had the opportunity to pass the football in actual intercollegiate competition this past season. Still, when he saw the field with our first-team offense in the 2007 Holiday Bowl for two full possessions ...

... the Horns scored 14 points on those two possessions in 1 minute and 37 seconds of playing time, while averaging 15 yards-per-play.

And that was against a nationally-ranked Arizona State team (as distinguished from Spring Practice).

It will be interesting to see what happens this Fall.

Reality: Chiles is, to this point in his career at Texas, a playmaker who is rarely allowed to play. In lieu of a serious injury to Colt, I don't see this changing.

Practice doesn't lead to perfect, perfect practice leads to perfect, so I really can't ask for more than what Chiles is showing in practice. After watching the video again, I am most impressed by how hard he runs and how quick he can get back to top speed after contact.

PFD, you need to get a subsciption to Orangebloods...it has been stated/reprted a couple of times on that website that Colt is underperforming and JC is throwing and running the ball very well, if not better than Colt. All I was asking was; IF JC continues to perform better than Colt will Mack start JC over Colt? Mack refused to do so last year with the linebackers;but will he do so with the QB? If you do not like speculation then you do not need to be posting on a message board, 90% of the stuff posted on a message board is purely speculation. Now go drink a beer and calm down.

Hey, I think times have changed. The last two MNC teams has some semblance of a 2 quarterback system, right? So, the critics that say well if you have 2 quarterbacks you really have none are off-base now IMHO.

I just watched the video and here are my thoughts:

Mack's last bit of brown hair has left and will not be returning.
The NEZ looks awesome.

Before the Holiday Bowl against Arizona State the coaches took every opportunity they could get to tell us about how everything is different as far as practices go. In all of that I remember them saying that the plan was to give JC every third drive or so. From what I've seen at practice, as well as the sweet practice reports mb-tf.com is putting out, the coaches seem to be sticking with what worked during the bowl practices. Lets hope that includes using JC with the starting offense on a regular basis.
