Lots have suggested this, but none have carried through.Horn Fans, after all this discussion I have decided to try & put together an event. I'll fire up the Bandera & lay out the spread, with a few questions & suggestions here.
Date: Maybe the 1st or 2nd weekend AFTER the Spring Game, which is supposed to be 31 March, according to the UT Website. I am thinking the 7th with the following weekend as a rain date. ?? Sunday is out due to some folks with church obligations / dedications, etc. Then again, the 8th is Easter, so I don't know for sure. Suggestions? Then again, this might be so close to the Spring Game that it's too close to another tailgate event...? Then again, this might be a more family oriented kind of thing. Suggestions?
Time: kickoff around 2p, maybe 3 with meat throwdown about 1 hour later? Need time to get the smoker going, layout set & all that. Remember also that sunset is around 8p, so there should be plenty of time.
Location: OK, so here's the potential crusher for some of y'all. My house in Oak Hill is NOT set up for this kind of event & we usually use my Mom's in Dripping Springs. Way plenty of parking (could fit like 40 cars if parked right) & there is lots of outdoor space (total of 11 acres) to mill around & the kids can run to their hearts desire. We have both covered & uncovered, indoors & out. The horses usually get fed around 6p this time of year & the kids can get in on this action. To get a general sense of where it's located, find Henly, Texas on your intarwebular mapping service of choice & it's about 5-1/2 miles due SE of there as the crow flies. If you live in Cedar Park, it's about a 1 hour drive. If you're in Oak Hill, plan on around 30 minutes.
Food items: If mudbugs are available @ the right price, there might be some... primarily the basic Q products: brisket, sausage, chicken & 'some' beef ribs.
Side dishes: This is where "the masses" come into play. I am n ot a 'side dish' kinda guy (the making, no problems with the eating). I kinda top out @ baked beans with bacon & hot sauce. I'll be asking for assistance in bringing the sides. If anyone wants to coordinate this, that would be great.
How much food? Unsure. I'll be asking for RSVP's & base it on this. I also recognize that if a large turnout seems likely, things related to food might be subject to change. I am also wondering if I could or should request a nominal donation of $ 1.00 - $ 2.00 per person (for good meat that will feed 4 peeps for a max of $ 8.00 doesn't seem too bad, does it?).
Additionally, if anyone wants to bring some of their own & do the "finish off in the cooler" for the drive out, that would be great as well.
Again, all of this is an idea right now. If anyone has thoughts, suggestions, questions & whatnots, feel free to add to this thread.
Any & all are welcome; just don't be afraid to attend!
PS: Definitely a BYOB event. I'm not going to sponsor anyone's booze, just my own.
