Latest from Erin. I'll ask LHG to post the picture that goes with this. m/

Here's me at work with our one of our coalition partners. MAJ Lim is a
Korean special forces officer. He's kind of funny. He's gets all
worked up and he's rubs the guys back, which they really don't enjoy
much. He's leaving soon and I get to do his job until his replacement
get here.

Later,
Erin

Erin's latest note. Eye-opening look at that war-torn country.

I went out to one of the villages last week with the civil affairs folks. They were doing a village assessment to try and determine their needs for things like schools, clinics, wells, etc. Here are some of the pictures.

The first picture is us getting ready to go. The second photo is the road on the way to the village. In the third picture
I'm standing in front of what was probably someone house. The marking on the side mean the building, or what's left of it, has been cleared of mines by that particular company. The forth picture are some of the kids and one of the guys that went with us. The kids jump into all the pictures. They really like digital cameras so they can see themselves right after you take the picture. The fifth picture is a shot of my tentmate and they guys. In the sixth picture you see another bombed out house. The seventh is myself and my tentmate trying to get a picture with these two guys but the kids won't let that happen. They have to be in the picture. In the eighth I was trying to get those two cute little kids. They were maybe 2-3 years old and eating some type of bread product. The ninth picture is us just standing around. The ninth is a guy and his sheep. Those are some brave sheep. You wouldn't catch me walking around in one of the fields around here.

Have you noticed that there are no women in these picture. I saw one stick her head out of a window and peek around the corner but that was it. No female over about 11 years old was out when we were there. On the way into the village we did see a lady on a donkey wearing a berka. That was about it. The folks in this village wanted a school. The Swiss had already given them a clinic. They also wanted a mosque rebuilt. Apparently some Taliban had been hidding in their mosque so we blew it up. Can't do it. The US doesn't rebuild religious structures. They will get nominated for a school.

It was freezing here last night. Ice on the ground this morning. Pea sized hail the day we went to the vilage. Apparently we're entering the raining season. I thought the rainy season in the desert was like one day where you get 1/10 of an inch of rain. It's been raining since I got here. This place is not right. I should have known that any place that's a half hour off the rest of the world wouldn't be normal. I think it's the half hour that throws of the weather. Just my guess.

The email has been down so it might be a while before I get to you again.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Got another UT Alumni's contact info from Pat at the Alumni Center: SSG Rivas from Greeley Colorado. He writes a column in the Greeley paper. Go to his jumpThe Link and do a search using keyword "Rivas". Internet & email seem to be a challenge, but snailmail works. You'll see they're limited to 13 ounces, but mail's still the life-blood of deployed military. Let's whistle the man up some mail!

m/

Got your address from Pat at the Ex Student's
Association
MAR: I will welcome email in time, but until I get
back from the Middle East, pls send snail mail. That I
can use.
>
> I have your snail mail address as:
> SSG RIVAS, Miguel A.
> C/1-44 ADA
> Unit 92695
> APO AE 09323-2695
MAR: Is correct. Limit letters to 13 ounces for now.
In time, when the infrastructure get set up, I can get
care package. So your letters will be welcomed. Pls do
send comments on my column if you get to read those
pieces.

> If E & Snail Mail are correct, I'll get em out to
> folks so we can get on with our job of making sure
> you know we appreciate the job you and your buddies
> are doing.
MAR: I do appreciate you taking the time to say hello.
Your letters will be a welcomed break from our
business there. A taste of Texas, even via Nebraska,
will be sweet.

Here are some cool pics of one of our Longhorn servicemen in Iraq.

Cpt. David Zinnante, being single and no strings attached, deployed to Kuwait/Iraq with the Division Command Group shortly after returning from Afghanistan.

One of him in Iraq with some locals and a "cigar" picture in a bunker in Kuwait with another Texan, Jose Reyes
(who graduated from St. Eds, but attended and was commissioned through UT's Army ROTC program).

Hello all. I am CPT Erin Jackson, currently stationed in Afghanistan and I just got the proper website address for Hornfans and link to this message board. Cecil told me that ya'll provided great support while he was here and I believe it since I recently received a package from one of your members, she gave me the correct site address and this link. I have been here for 6 months now but I'm not leaving anytime soon. There is a new longhorn here. He's been here several months but I just found out about it. He's in Kandahar, I'm in Bagram. He's a chinook pilot. I tried to hook him up with Tom Richey but he hasn't gotten back to me.

I will be here for some presently undefined amount of time. Due to Iraq a stop movement has been placed on units here so noone knows when we'll get out of here.

I do believe I will be here for at least the beginning of football season and I'd love to get copies of the games, like Cecil did. I wish I'd had this address earlier. I saw parts of 2 UT basketball games since I've been here and they didn't show any UT games during March madness. It was very upsetting. Anyone happen to have a copy of the UT games from March madness? I'd love to get them.

Well, I just wanted to drop a line to say that I'm now on hornfans. I can also be reached via email at [email protected]

One thing....I read all of the post related to this thread and I would like to clear up one thing. No, I repeat no, graduate of Army ROTC has to go to OCS at any point in their military career. When you graduate and get commissioned you are a 2LT, an officer, which would make going to an Officer Candidate School pointless. All 2LT commissionees do go to an Officer Basic Course, regardless of their commissioning source, after their commission. West Point, UT, A & M, and all other ROTCs alike. OCS is designed for enlisted service members who want to become officers or folks selected for a direct commission, which I don't think happens much any more. The misinformation running around this thread was really bugging me.

I look forward to being a part of the hornfans community.

Latest from Sgt Rivas: Apparently internet's tough in Iraq so his request is Snail Mail when possible.

Well, HF 86 is now in Baghdad. I left the comforts of Germany two weeks ago and will be here for the future. I will try and post some pics of this place. At least I have connectivity to the web.

God Bless everyone in that war. I have family in Iraq and a roomate who may soon be going over....

Just wanted to let everyone know that while I was home (finally) on leave, I stopped by the university and presented a couple of flags to different people/groups. For all of the alumni that sent cards, letters and packages, I presented a flag that I flew in Afghanistan to Carol Barrett at the Alumni Center. I physically gave it to her, but it was a gesture for ALL alumni. You guys should(?) be able to see it if/when you go back for games'n'such.

I also stopped by and talked to Kasey Johnson, Coach Mack's assistant. (Funny... seems while I was in Texas, Coach Brown was in North Carolina. Go figure...) Anyway, the picture of David and I holding the Longhorn flag in Afghanistan is all over the Field House. I had all the other alumni that were deployed there (that I knew of) sign that flag and I gave it to the Football program to display with the picture.

Anyway, just wanted to say "Thanks" and keep up the support. If I'm right, we'll probably have people deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq for a while longer, so your cards, letters and packages are appreciated and shared by all. Keep sending them.

THANK YOU.

I see we have not been posting in recent months - that doesn't mean we don't care or are not supporting you guys. I do and I know many others here in Texas that do, despite what you may hear in the media.

What your doing in Afghanistan & Iraq IS very important in the war on terror. Thank you for serving and stay safe!!

Bought a couple of magnetic "yellow ribbons" from a customer in S Dakota last week. Her son's in Iraq and I'd been seeing those magnetics on lots of cars there and in N Dakota. Found a couple of web sites that carry them for decent prices, one also has 82nd & 101st Airborne versions. Search for "magnetic yellow ribbons". I'm NOT endorsing the sites and haven't ordered anything from them so I can't vouch for them. Just thought I'd let folks know about another way we can show our support on the back of our cars, like the "Bevo" helmet decals and magnetics we sport on game days.
