i think that i made a mistake on what i ordered...i got the bella muffaleta, was not very good...but even my roomie got the more normal cafe style meal, catfish, mash taters, mac and cheese, and it was not very good...

maybe me growing up in a small town i am just used to better homestyle cooking, or maybe it was just a bad night...

spending over ten dollars on what i got will make sure that i never go back there again....

I have had the muffaleta at Hoover's, did not dig it either, the olives tasted funky.

Try Gene's New Orleans on West 11th for some good soul food.

cheese on everything.....

JohnyBlaze, didnt you recommend this place to me...poo on you...hey, alex thought that the catfish fillets would have bones in them....silly him

love me some hoovers.

chicken fried steak, cream gravy, mashed taters, mac & cheese, iced tea, mango cobler.

you can thank me later.

My brother sent back his muffaletta because it tasted so bad. I've never been overly impressed with anything I have ever had there.

I saw VY there his freshman year, I felt the magic back then when I saw him order from a far corner booth.

Couda been an off night. Food quality has come down a bit over the last few years, as Hoover has started to expand. A lot of focus has gone into the development of the Alamo Heights area location and now he has shifted up to the new north location.

Mac&Cheese + Sour Cream is awesome. Jerk Chicken, Pork Chops, CFS, Jez Ham are the entrees to stick by. His mashed potatoes are usually outstanding, Jalapeno Creamed Spinach, sometimes need a kick but just ask and they'll mix it up. Fries are excellent. His greens are very good as well. Ever once and awhile the garclic cheese grits come on special. Wow, they are good.

Hoovers to say the least is one of my favorites in austin. I'd go there again and again over 90% of the places to choose from here in Austin.

Gene's is usually great as well. Food has MUCH larger swings than Hoover's though depending on what night. Tuesday is my stand by night with the Special. Fantastic.

Mr. Catfish is out in East Austin on Weberville I believe. Speciality there though is catfish (obviously). You can try to other things, much greasier than Hoovs though usually.

All in all, they the 3 of them blow Threagills outta the water. You do need to remember that Austin is not South/East Dallas, Central Houston or East Texas. The market for soul food is remarkably small, but I feel we have three + solid options in town.

Moonshine, although not classic soul food and its price tag being higher, is one of the best places in town.

What town are you from? Like to know your favorite small town dives. I try a lot of them out while traveling cross Texas.

Hoover's is one of those places I have given several chances because I thought I was missing something. Each time I come away terribly unimpressed. Won't bother going back.

Dot's smokes Hoover's anyway. Mama Dot kicks ***.

i am from sealy texas...grew up eating at sportmans restaurant, when it was still there....my mom was a waitress there...my god they had the best seafood buffet on fri and sat nights....

now tonys (where my mom works now) is really the only place in sealy that is that hometown style cafe, and the breakfast special imo cant be beat...also the steam table is quite delicious...

if you are ever in eagle lake, hit up the sportmans there, that is the original one, if it is still there. i havent been that way in awhile or asked about it...

i guess i will give hoovers another try one day and try something suggested on this board...just never ever again the bella muffaleta

Sportsman. hmm. Reminds me more of Schoebel's or whatever in Brenham. Not knocking it, its good, maybe I should head back and give it whirl. 102 has gotta be one of my favorite roads in Texas (on a sidenote).

Never been tony's, will check it out. Seafood dives: Taste of Sargent, Red Snappe Inn in Surfside...I like those.

down home cooking for a price...Royer's round Top Cafe. Don't know if they cant be beat.

Cheap, Blue Bonnet in Marble Falls is one of the greatest for breakfast and CFS.

i definilty need to try some of these places...i have hit up alot of the mexican food places here in austin, but going to hoovers was the first "soul food" place i have gone here in austin....

keep the names coming, i am gonna make a list
