I am excited & enticed by the allure this presents, but yeah - for me, the solitude of this kind of trip would be difficult. Sorta like going to Disney World by yourself. Sure is fun, but in the end you need someone to comiserate with about things many years downline. It's the shared experience aspect of it.
When I was 13, my Mom took me & my Brother on a 3-1/2 month trip all around the USA & into Western Canada. We spent most of our time in National Parks & only used a hotel one time (Indianapolis, IIRC). We did the KOA thing as well & I think there are memberships that will give you a reasonable to maybe even significant discount on campgrounds - look into Good Sam, etc.
That trip really shaped the world view I have (even though we only went to Canada). It made me realize there was more going on than my own back yard.
If you have a properly outfitted camper rig, you can go 'brown water' by yourself for a few days, then do a discharge @ some of the available locations in most towns 'of size'.
Provided you have the capital to make this work for you, then I say go for it... but again, I couldn't do this for long by myself.
Here's a suggestion: go to nursing school for 2 years, then take a series of 6 month assignments as a "traveler". Texas long enough for football, then off to Hawai'i... then Texas, then a short run in Northern Cali... there are also overseas assignments available, but I think only RN's are gonna be eligible for this.
