Hitting the road... for good.

I am excited & enticed by the allure this presents, but yeah - for me, the solitude of this kind of trip would be difficult. Sorta like going to Disney World by yourself. Sure is fun, but in the end you need someone to comiserate with about things many years downline. It's the shared experience aspect of it.

When I was 13, my Mom took me & my Brother on a 3-1/2 month trip all around the USA & into Western Canada. We spent most of our time in National Parks & only used a hotel one time (Indianapolis, IIRC). We did the KOA thing as well & I think there are memberships that will give you a reasonable to maybe even significant discount on campgrounds - look into Good Sam, etc.

That trip really shaped the world view I have (even though we only went to Canada). It made me realize there was more going on than my own back yard.

If you have a properly outfitted camper rig, you can go 'brown water' by yourself for a few days, then do a discharge @ some of the available locations in most towns 'of size'.

Provided you have the capital to make this work for you, then I say go for it... but again, I couldn't do this for long by myself.

Here's a suggestion: go to nursing school for 2 years, then take a series of 6 month assignments as a "traveler". Texas long enough for football, then off to Hawai'i... then Texas, then a short run in Northern Cali... there are also overseas assignments available, but I think only RN's are gonna be eligible for this.

You are going to be hauling around a TON of ******* ****. If you TRUELY want to be a vagabond and hit the open road get something like a 4x4 Sportsmobile. Something like this-

Used Austin sportsmobiles
Get a rack for the rear where you can put a 250 enduro bike on the bike and indeed you can go and do anything you want and be able to park ANYWHERE overnight without having to pay for a space to park the damn big rig you will be shackled to.

Anyhow just my opinion if you want to really feel free, I might toss a kayak on top and a mountain bike if it were me. But it depends on what your are after. I would really try to travel light if i were in your situation. The sportsmobiles are not cheap but you can go to a LOT more primative and remote areas if you truly want to go off the grid. A solar panel roof as an extra option and this is your real ticket to go ANYWHERE you want...

just my opinion though.

So how bout it Bernard. Have you given this anymore thought? If I had the balls to do this, I believe I would do as Summer suggested. For me, having a long bed pick-up with a camper equipped with a bathroom and small galley kitchen would work. I would pull a trailer behind it to carry a small boat, an enduro bike, and other camping gear. I would set out and go coast to coast and see how many girls I could hook up with. If I was'nt married.
