south congress and lehman (just south of oltorf)

7-11 had gas for $2.97
next door at
shell had gas for $2.99

on my way down there last night i noticed 7-11 on barton springs had gas for $3.56.

choose wisely.

here is the link...
The Link

damnit... they dropped another .10 cents. i should've waited.

And oil is down another five dollars a barrel today.

On Saturday I saw gas for 3.11 at Wal-Mart and, about two miles away, 3.49 at Shell.

i had questioned awhile back why gas prices can differ so greatly from one location to another just a mile away.

someone came up with taxes and **** like that. i'm still calling ********.

other places on south congress were still around the $3.30 mark while others were at the $3.50.

looking at that link you can see so many different stations in one mile radius with very flucuating price differences.

there is more to it than taxes.

GOO,

I think it's a function of what they originally paid for the gas and how quickly they sell it.

Service stations only make a few pennies per gallon sold.

If they paid 3.40 a gallon to fill up their huge underground storage tank and, within a week, oil prices drop 10%, well, they are still sitting on that 3.40 cents per gallon. The guy down the street, however, gets his undeground tank filled at today's price, the new, drastically lowered price. So he can charge much lower prices for his gas.

Meanwhile, you, a small business owner, are sitting on your expensive gas. Are you going to sell it at a loss?

I'm sure Wal-Mart, being a huge company, has it's underground storage tanks emptied much faster than a joe mom and pop shop. This works to Wal-Mart's disadvantage when the price of oil is going up but to its advantage when the price is going down.

Bevo Incognito is correct. Conv store owners are probably making all of 5 cents per gallon. Depending on what day they bought gas and for what price dictates selling price.. Stations were filled this am will be cheaper than places that were filled on friday.. etc..

Regardless of price, the conv owners make pretty much a set amount per gallon (not a percentage..) Higher gas prices kill their cash flow for sure...

This is a little off topic but, related on a tangent because the store owners are trying to make up for lost margains on gas. Does it infuriate any one else how all of the "convenience" stores have slowed thier gas pumps down so people will get bored and go into the store and make a purchase. I know this has been going on for a while now but some pumps have slown down to a trickle.

We are so conditioned. Remember a year ago? Bitching about $3 gas.

Now we are ecstatic about it.

i'm happy to see gas prices falling again. yes.

i'd be satisfied to see gas prices back down in the $1.00 range like the dinosaurs intended.

I do not believe the lower price reflects anything but a localized price war/marketing for publicity scheme. I saw the owner of the gas station interviewed on the news yesterday, and he said his company (Shell?) ordered him to match the price of the 7-11 across the street.
These businesses aren't too quick to lower prices when the price of oil falls. They are only quick when they can get away with raising them daily.

incognito, a lot of what coder said.

if they get the gas put underground at $3.50...then they raise it to $3.75 because oil went up that week. so they're banking on the current supply they have.

but the same can't be said when they gas is put underground at $3.50 and oil drops the following week to $3.25..

What's weird is that I would think out in the hill country gas would be more expensive than in Austin. But I saw a Valero in Marble Falls with gas for $3.30 and an HEB with gas for $3.17

$2.89 off Airport east near 35.... saw that today at 2 different locations!

would you say the quality of the gas is ****** b/c it's cheaper?

Live down in Corpus Christi, and our gas keeps dropping just about every day. at several stations, it was down to $2.85 on Monday, then it was $2.82 at several stations on Tuesday. Came to work this morning and saw a couple stations selling it for $2.79. i'm digging the trend.

Ok so why are all these stations in South Austin dropping the price to half a dollar less than what North Austin is charging?

I guess gas prices don't have any relation to price of real estate/cost of living. I think south Austin is more expensive than north Austin, right?

$2.79 yesterday on Airport between Bolm and MLK at 2 different locations. Lines were backed up!! I attempted, but to only get honked at, so I went to the Phillips and paid $2.99.

it was 2.93 at william cannon and mopac area. most of those gas stations were among the cheapest around. driving up through West to dallas for the OU game the little chech bakery was 2.83 on friday afternoon. that place always has the cheapest gas around. always stop there to get some kolaches and fill up. hopefully it's even cheaper on my way back to austin

Property taxes is a big reason for it here in Texas.

Lets say owner A has a small shop out in the boonies on a tiny strip of land. His place is valued at 200k. He pays taxes based on that.

Lets say owner B has a big shop that is on the feeder of a major thoroughfare. His place values at 500k.

They pay the same amount for gas, but owner B owes 2.5 more in taxes. His only way to make up for it is by upping his prices.

Back when I used to live in Hays County, sometimes we would fill up in New Braunfels if we happened to be headed that direction. Gas in Comal County seems to be reliably 15-20 cents cheaper than Austin for some reason.

The Gasbuddy website says that the Wal-Mart and Valero down there are running $2.62 right now...
